Chen was the first one to arrive at English.
The bell had yet to ring, and he was still at the door, waiting for the students to leave the classroom. He had came to school late and only wanted to go to this class.
The bell rang and he charged inside, shoving other students aside. He waited for the student that had the class before him to leave his seat and pack up his things. He eyed Chen suspiciously.
"You okay, bro?", the boy said curiously.
Chen nodded. As soon as the boy left his seat, Chen slid in and sat down. He was the only one in the classroom. Ms. Cain looked at him.
"Chen! I haven't seen you here so early. How are you liking America so far?", she asked.
Chen wanted to tell her the truth, but he just smiled timidly. "Good".
"Nice! I hope you like your group that I set you up with. I look forward to seeing what you all come up with", she said.
Chen looked at Ms. Cain. "Ms. Cain...", he started. He didn't know how to put what he thought into words she would understand. Even if she did she would think he was crazy.
"Yes?", she said.
"Nothing", he looked down at his desk. He looked out the window. The barren landscape shimmered, and Chen looked on to see if maybe somehow, if he looked far enough, he could see when he went last night.
"Chen. Let's get to work. Now", Lisa was right in front of Chen's desk leaning over him. Her eyes had a certain urgency to them, so Chen hopped up and grabbed a computer.
Not soon after, Kevin and Lindsey walked in, their faces reflecting Lisa's and Chen's. They were near the back of the room, out of earshot and Lisa gave all of them a breakdown of what Kevin and her talked about.
Lindsey took her time processing the information, then spoke, her voice distant, "So they saw an alien".
"We don't know", Lisa whispered.
"Then what the heck is on Kevin's back?".
She grew silent. Lisa started itching her hand, and looked down. Chen and Kevin exchanged looks.
"Look, it's all in here! It's not an alien, but maybe a human hybrid thing? That can withstand a lot of things like torture and can do a lot of things that a normal human can't do", Lisa explained.
Lindsey nodded. Kevin and Chen all mimicked her. Lisa sighed. "Guys listen, I know whatever you guys saw in there must have been bad. I have proof with this folder. If we turn this in"-
"No! Don't even think about it!", Lindsey ripped the folder from Lisa's hands.
"Lindsey!"-
"You said it already! We left so much of our traces down there, that the government will be on our asses any day now! And then since we know too much we're gonna get killed by them".
"I never said that", Lisa's eyes were wide.
"You pretty much did. We're gonna die because of you ", Lindsey snapped at her.
Lisa's heart rate started going up. She looked around. More people were entering the classroom, she felt eyes on her. The cold, hard eyes that penetrated her through her clothes and through her skin which made her hair stand up. She felt afraid, and she wanted it to go away. Why is she like this?, she thought. I'm just trying to help the best that I can.
Kevin looked at Lindsey his face scrunched up with displeasure. "What is your problem? You have been such a douche lately", Kevin said blatantly.
Lindsey rose her eyebrows in surprise. "Are we seriously having this conversation? Me? A douche?", she started laughing hysterically which made the whole class look their way. Kevin shook her, trying to make her stop. Tears formed in her eyes because she was laughing so hard.
