1. Parents Evening
As soon as Mike's fist connected with my cheek, I felt my back scraping against the little end table by the sofa. The tears eased out of my eyes but I kept my mouth closed. It only made him worse if I cried out loud. He walked out of the room and then I heard the front door slam shut, the frame shuddered with the force.
I got up slowly, wincing in pain and felt my back under my top. It was bleeding. Forcing back the tears I hurried upstairs as quickly as I could, and entered our bedroom.
Ours.
Mike and I.
I took off my top and looked at my back in the mirror with some difficulty. It wasn't too bad, and the bleeding would stop soon.
Why didn't I remind Mike that I was going before?
I looked at my watch then gasped in anguish. It was six forty-five and the school parents evening started at seven.
Being a teacher angered Mike. I was always going to parent's evenings, fairs, and different events that the school threw for the children. He told me I should quit but I couldn't. I loved my Year 4 class. He said I didn't leave enough time for him and that at 23, I was too young to be surrounded by children already. Tears sprung to my eyes as I realized that could be why Mike hadn't asked me to marry him yet.
Running down the stairs, I pulled my top on and straightened my clothes. Although Mike hated it when I let my hair out, I took off the little black hair band I had around it and ruffled my hair then let it fall. Looking in the framed mirror, I freshened up my face so it didn't look like I'd cried and my eyes weren't so puffy. Seeing I still looked pained, I pasted on a smile.
A pale face with a few freckles sprinkled over the bridge of a small button nose stared back at me with sad green eyes, a fake smile and strawberry blonde hair cascading down feminine shoulders like a waterfall on fire.
I sighed wearily and left the room, descending the stairs hurriedly. I opened the front door, entered my car and started up the engine while placing my hair back into a ponytail.
As I left the street I glanced at my watch, ten minutes to get there. I knew I'd be able to make it but I wouldn't be able to get my notes ready unless I really hurried.
I arrived with two minutes to spare and sped through the school doors, realizing that parents had already started arriving.
Almost an hour and a half later, I had seen all but two children's parents and one of them wasn't coming. I smiled at David's parents and watched them go. They didn't smile back. It wasn't my fault David never listened in class, never did his homework and was rude to everyone including me. It was theirs.
I really felt sorry for the children of parents who blamed everyone but their own children and themselves. It was a burden they would hold for the rest of their lives.
Once they closed the door I fell back onto my seat heavily and lay my head on the desk. I was just falling into a delicious sleep when I heard a knock on the door.
I tried to get up but the door was opened and my foot got stuck in the chair leg.
Feeling incredibly embarrassed, I untangled my foot whilst apologising. I heard one of the most musical laughs I've ever heard and knew which child's parents I was seeing next. Kathy Summer's.
