Unnatural
Prologue
Jaelin wasn't an ordinary girl. She was going to find that out. She didn't know who she was. She couldn't remember anything before twelve months ago. Lots of people knew who she was, and some knew who shouldn't. Some people knew who she could be, and were afraid of that. Jaelin's destiny had been set. One thing you must remember in this story: a man meets his destiny on the road he took to avoid it.
Chapter 1 Jaelin
"Jaelin!" I covered my head with my pillow. My door slammed open. "Jaelin, get up!" I groaned and said "Go away!" my stepsister grabbed my feet and dragged me out of bed. Then she screamed "Wake up!" right in my ear. I rolled over and sat up. "Marines have it easier," I muttered. Dakota kicked me in the leg. "Ok, I'm up!" Dakota hauled me to my feet. "Didnt you remember you were supposed to make my breakfast, or did you forget that too?" "No comment," I muttered, raking my hand through my hair and heading downstairs. While I was getting out Dakota's friggin' eggs, the phone rang. "Hello?" the voice coming through the receiver turned me to a statue. It was Mr. Ryan. I shoved the phone away from my ear and pressed the disconnect button as fast as possible. Mr. Ryan was my stepmom's date. After my mom died, my dad married another woman, and they were happy together for awhile. But then my dad died and my stepmom was back "In the market". Something about Mr. Ryan seemed wrong to me. "Jaelin!! My eggs!!" I rolled my eyes and walked over the table. "Here's your eggs." I smashed them on her head. "Runny, just the way you like them." she grabbed my by the back of the neck and escorted me downstairs. I knew where I was headed, but I couldn't stop laughing. She took my to my usual place of punishment when I did somethig she didn't like. I was a hole in the basement floor big enough for me fit in down to my waist. I would sit upside down for various lengths of time. She would shove me in it as revenge. But it was so worth it. I'm not sure how long I sat there before the spiders tickled so much I started my usual sound halfway between screaming and laughing. Then my stepmom found me and pulled me out. "Go wash off! Daniel will be here any minute!" "I got shoved into a hole and you're worried about Ryan?" "Yeah, I'll yell at Dakota later." we went upstairs and just as else were passing the door, it oppened. Ryan came in, and we exhanged the usual greetings. Then the adults started talking. I started feeling a bit queasy. Then all color faded from my vision. Not again. I stopped breathing and passed out.
When I woke up, I was in my bed. My stepmom was on one side, and Mr. Ryan on the other. "Jay, what happened? Are you ok?" my head was sore, and my left shoulder was doing something it shouldn't. I sat up. "Ow." my stepmom put her hand on my shoulder. "Are you ok?" I nodded. "Yeah, sure. I'm fine." Ryan said "Sure you are!" and slapped me on the back. It was supposed to be one of those manly pats, put it was on my shoulder. "Ow..." I whimpered. "Oh, sorry, I didn't mean to..." I used my good arm to shove him off his chair. "Jay! Be nice!" I rolled my eyes. "uh....mom....my shoulder isn't feeling too good." "it doesn't look too good either. The doc's on his way." within ten minutes, the doctor was popping my shoulder back into place. And it hurt. He put it in a sling and told me to use it as little as possible. He could count on that. Ryan and Danise, my stepmom, were downstairs having breakfast. I went into my room and collapsed on the bed. I read a book for awhile, then flipped on the tv in my room. Nothing good was on, so I just scrolled through the channels over and over again. Finally, around six p.m. I fell asleep. In the middle of the night, something woke me up. It was almost pitch black. I could see a bit, but what I saw wasn't what scared me. What scared me was the slimy thing I could feel crawling on my neck. Then, something happened. I felt scales brush my arm. A hot wind swept across my face. Then my lungs turned to iron, and my vision blurred. The last thing I saw before I slipped from the world was...
....a dragon.
