Agent Michael Kim : So you found Kate's veil abandoned in the woods. And you were sure she'd been kidnapped.
Me : That's right.
Agent Michael Kim : You were worried.
Me : Wouldn't you be?
Agent Michael Kim : We're not talking about me. What did you do next?
Me : What anyone would do! I went to the police!
Agent Michael Kim : To... Chief Walsh?
Me : Yup.
Agent Michael Kim : you don't sound very happy about that...
Me : Oh believe me... I'm not.
With my best friend kate's mud-splattered veil clutched in my fist, I and Deputy Naomi Silverhawk head directly to the Birchport police station. I determined that this new evidence will convince the police chief to invetigate Kate's disappearance. Deputy Jeff Duffy is near the door, brewing a pot of coffee. He glances my way as I enter.
Jeff : Oh, uh, the chief isn't taking--
The two of us barrel past him towards chief walsh's desk. He glares straight at me.
Tommy : You again?!
Naomi : Sir, we found clear evidence of foul play at the Sterling estate.
Tommy : And why were you investigating that scene? Didn't I tell everyone to go back to the station? Including you, Silverhawk?
Naomi : Yes, Chief. But Friday shared a piece of information with me that prompted--
Tommy : Friday? Who the hell is Friday?
Me : I am. Maybe you remember me better as 'you again'?
Tommy : And why are you interfering with my investigation, Friday?
Me : Because, you aren't investigating. You couldn't get out there fast enough! Kate is missing, and you didn't even search the grounds! As a reporter for the New york Herald, it's pretty clear to me that you had no interest in actually figuring out what was going on.
Tommy : A reporter?! Deputy Silverhawk, why are you fratermnizing with reporters? You know the rules. I could fire you for this!
Naomi : Do it. Fire me. And if -- when -- whatever happened to Kate comes to light, enjoy the blowback for quashing an active investigation.
Walsh exhales heavily, glaring first at Naomi, then at me.
Naomi : Chief, I wouldn't waste your time. You need to see the new evidence we uncovered.
I hold up the veil, now in an evidence bag. The trampled peach rosettes seem especially forlorn under the station's glaring fluorescent lights.
Me : It's Kate's veil. We found it deep in the woods behind the Sterling mansion.
Walsh reaches out the veil from me.
