Maeve's POV
Day 1I've been on my own for a while now, so I'm used to it. I never really had anyone to help or guide me, especially because my parents died right at the beginning of the apocalypse.
My mother and I were abused by my father, and as soon as he figured out that the world was going to shit, he shot my mom in the middle of our living room.
I heard the gun shot from upstairs, so I grabbed my pocket knife and started sprinting down my stairs. I knew who took that shot, I knew my mom was gone. But that didn't mean I wasn't going to do something about it.
My dad was still looking down at my bleeding out mother when I took my first hit. I plunged my blade into the back of his neck, halting my run. I pulled the knife back out and paused. It felt good... So good to pay him back for how he treated us.
He turned around while I was still paused and before I knew it, I had taken a blow to the face. As I fell, I noticed that he used his fist and not the gun. That's when I kicked up and hit his hand so the gun fell on the floor. I took it before he could and shot him in the chest.
That's when I heard the banging on the door. I thought it was my neighbors who had heard all of the gunshots, so I just looked out the window instead of opening the door so they wouldn't see my parents dying on the floor.
I seen a sight I could have never imagined. All of the dead, up and walking, but also on my doorstep. I knew I had to get out. I had to live, for my mom.
I ran upstairs and grabbed my dad's big army backpack from the hall closet. I emptied the entire thing out. Then I ran into my room and grabbed 5 hair ties, a brush, deodorant, perfume, 2 pairs of short socks, 2 pairs of long socks, my makeup bag, a sweater, 2 short sleeved shirts, and 3 pairs of jeans (2 ripped and 1 normal). Then I changed out of my comfy attire and into a black t-shirt, black ripped jeans, my watch on my right wrist, and my red converse.
Then I ran into my dad's gun cabinet and got 3 pistols, 2 pocket knives, 1 machete, and a ton of ammo. I also took his big leg holster and put his machine gun in that, attached to my right leg.
And finally into the kitchen I went. I grabbed 3 water bottles, 2 pouches of sunflower seeds, a whole box of fruit snacks, and a bottle of vitamins.
That's when I remembered that my dad left some more of his army gear down in the "cellar" where he used to torture me and my mother. I was hesitant at first to go in there, but I knew how useful the stuff down their could be, so I went anyways.
Once I made it down the stairs to open the door, I stopped for a few seconds. I told myself, 'come on, don't be such a pussy. Don't let dad be right about you. Be stronger, braver, beat him in this world.' So I opened the door, and ran to his army bin. I pulled out 6 hand grenades, and some more small guns (3) and blades (5) and put them in the bag as well.
I also came upon a mini crossbow that you can attach to your wrist. I remembered being shot by it several times in the past, which made me hesitant to take it. But I did anyways. As I heard my own screams replaying in my mind, I attached the small bow to my left wrist, which hurt because of all the cuts, and put all of my dad's arrows in my bag.
I thought I had got enough supplies to last me a while, so I took off back upstairs to leave the house. As i made my way into the living room again, I grabbed my notebook from the table in there and my bag of pens and slipped them in the bag real fast as well.
That's when I heard the noises. I turned around quick, not knowing what it was. I seen my father, but in a different way. He was dead... But alive... At the same time?... A walker. I pulled out one of the pistols from the bag and shot him, hitting him in the forehead. It looked like he had died... Again. So I stepped over his body and decided that it was a better idea to also keep a small gun on hand as well as the machine gun.
All of the walkers were still at my front door. We lived in the middle of Atlanta, so I knew there would be a ton of walkers, all around me. All around anyone who was trying to survive. I remembered there was a little farm house back about 4 miles from my house on the country side. It had always been unoccupied, so I knew there would probably be a low chance of walkers around there.
I ran into my parents bedroom on the right side of the house, and in their bathroom was a big window I could unlatch and pull up toware I could slide out. When I unlatched the window, I looked out of it before trying to climb out. There wasn't any walkers in the back yard at the moment, so I slid out of the window and darted to the next building.
I seen a herd of walkers start to come my way. I didn't know what to do, so I just sprinted in front of them and didn't stop running until I got to the beginning of the countryside, where I knew there wouldn't be to many walkers. I looked at my watch and it was already 5 in the afternoon. That means I had been running for 2 straight hours.
I only had 4 hours until it got dark, so I had to hurry to get to the house before then. I did not want to still be out when the walkers were out. I walked down the trial to the house until 7 and then started jogging. The trial was still beautiful, even with dead people walking around. The trial was made of white gravel, and had roses all down the sides of it.
After 3 hours I finally made it to the small house. I felt like crawling inside, but in my mind that felt to over dramatic and dumb. I twisted the doorknob and it unlatched. When I got inside I checked the entrance way, living room, dining room, kitchen, bathroom, and the two bedrooms. I didn't see any walkers, so I went back into one of the bedrooms and fell asleep. I had a lot of planning to do for the house tomorrow.
