For being constantly surrounded by people, Hizashi was lonely.
Not all the time, of course, but even when surrounded by a group, most of the time it felt like there wasn't a single other soul he could really connect to. He was almost grateful for the reprieve of solitude he got as he walked out the main gates of U.A.
His headphones were on and he pretended not to hear the other students shouting goodbyes at him. It was rude, he knew, but he needed a few moments to himself. The confidence he wore was a façade, and while it helped in the moment, it left him feeling drained and tired. The positive side was that every day, a little more of that confidence felt more genuine.
Finally, Hizashi took the headphones off, dropping them around his neck. He took a deep breath and let it out, closing his green eyes for a moment. Ahead on the sidewalk, he noticed the only classmate that didn't sap his energy sitting on the walkway, a stray cat on his lap. He didn't know what it was about Shota; maybe it was his incredible lack of interest in...well, everything, from what Hizashi could see. Something about his tired disapproval was fascinating. Shota was also one of the only people Hizashi had met that hadn't taken an instant fascination to him.
He was still far away, but he opened his mouth. "Hey Shota!" he called, picking up his pace and half-hoping that he wouldn't run away.
The cat was instantly alert but remained sitting in the teen's lap. Shota's head snapped to the side and might have been glaring at Hizashi walked closer and sat next to him. Although, Shota always sort of looked like he was pissed off at something. Hizashi hoped it wasn't him, and held his breath, a smile plastered on his face. "Hey," Shota said, returning his attention to the kitten who was settling back to sleep.
"What are you doing out here? Shouldn't you be getting home?"
Shota shrugged, running his hand over the cat's gray fur. "There's more on your mind than what I'm doing sitting here with a cat, Hizashi. Get to the point if you have one."
Right. Not a boy of many words, Hizashi wondered if people who talked to much – people like him –annoyed Shota as much as he seemed to think he did. Still, he wanted to be friends with him. Before Hizashi could open his mouth to say anything else, Shota did. "You seem like you're afraid of using your quirk. In that case, why are you even in the hero course?"
Glad for the sunglasses that hid his eyes, Hizashi stared at the stoic boy next to him, his mouth slightly agape. How had he noticed that? No one else had seemed to, not even the teacher. The truth was, not many people understood the damage he could do if he really tried. The directional speaker he'd had made with his costume helped him minimize, but he was still scared shitless of doing any fighting in residential areas. The destruction he could cause, the people he could hurt without meaning to...
"If you never use it and rely only on your ability to evade the enemy, then you're never going to be able to control it. You do know that, don't you?"
Looking down, Hizashi nodded. "I just don't want to end up hurting anyone. Everyone else's studies are just as important as mine, and if I send someone to the hospital—"
"Don't worry about them." Hizashi looked up to see the look in Shota's eyes hadn't changed. He was as serious as ever. "You have some of the top marks in the class, I know you have a brain in there somewhere." Shota's hand moved from the cat purring in his lap as it slept and rested on a shocked Hizashi's. "Figure out the best way to use your quirk, and stop being so afraid of it."
"It's just...it's hard to control. When I get too excited, I barely even know I'm using it until I notice someone suffering."
To his surprise, Shota's mouth twitched up into something resembling a smile. "Then you should probably keep someone around you can keep you in check."
Hizashi still looked shocked as he stared at Shota. There was no one he could have been referring to other than himself. As far as Hizashi knew, Shota was the only one with a quirk that could cancel other quirks. At least, he was the only one they knew who possessed such a quirk. "You would do that for me, Shota?"
The boy shrugged, his hand still on top of Hizashi's on the sidewalk. "Sure. If you're not trying your hardest, there's no point in having gone through all the trouble to get into U.A. in the first place."
He thought of Shota and his dislike for attention, and while he didn't want to push him away, he had to make sure he knew what he was getting himself into. Hizashi enjoyed being the center of attention, he liked being loud and boisterous in class. "You do realize the amount of time you're going to have to spend around me for that, don't you Shota?"
The smile was still barely there on Shota's face as he leaned in a little closer to Hizashi, his lips grazing the blond's cheek before he pulled back. "In fact, I'm counting on it."
Gently, disturbing the stray as little as possible, Shota lifted it up. The kitten opened its eyes as he set it down on the ground gently, stretched, and wandered off. He stood, the absence of his hand leaving Hizashi's suddenly cold as heat rose to his cheeks. Shota looked down at a still-stunned Hizashi, who for once was rendered speechless. "I've got to get going." He raised his hand in a brief wave and turned.
Raising his own hand, a moment too late, Hizashi muttered a goodbye. His hand moved to his cheek, where Shota's lips had been for half a second. He didn't know what had happened, or how he'd found himself speechless, or why there was such a fluttering feeling in his chest, but he was suddenly looking forward to walking through the main gates the next morning.
