" Doctor, she says she still has pains around her heart and her skin is always sore. I don't know what to do with her, she's useless." The mother contemplated, spitting out her words as if they tasted foul. "That girl is a freak, doctor, I don't want her. She's unhealthy and I'm so tired of going to the hospital all the time. Surely you can see how taxing it is on me? My back aches so much and do you hear me moaning about it all the time? No. I don't want to have to be a taxi driver."
" But , Madame, surely you can see how ill she is?" The doctor dug his fingernails into his palm, he was losing this battle. The lady needed to calm down, immediately. This situation was helpless, he was helpless. He'd encountered difficult patients before, but this lady... This lady had been arguing with him for two hours and she looked like she has no intention of slowing down, let alone stopping.
"Excuse me! You're supposed to be the best doctor in Russia! I suggest you fix her quickly, she's useless to me in that crippled state. She's to be married as soon as possible, so be quick. I assure you that you do not want to mess with the family. Anyway, who wants to marry a crippled alibino, for goodness sake? Being albino itself is bad enough! "
Just behind the door, the poor albino girl lay sobbing against the wall. Five years old, her small body had already experienced so much pain. Pain that made her violently shudder and scream silently, pain that made her gasp and hold her breath, pain that stilled her heart for a second and sent her into spasms of twitching . The pain got worse every day. She understood everything that was said behind that closed door. Her own mother, marrying her off? Her own mother calling her a cripple? Her own mother calling her useless? If her own mother detested her so much, what did the rest of the world think of her? She hit her fists on the floor, hating her mother, hating the doctor for not curing her, hating herself for being alive.
