My little contribution to Adrienette April. This is a soulmate AU where everyone sees in black-and-white until they find their soulmate™. When they touch their soulmate™ (thatswhatshesaid) for the first time, they see all the colors. every color. color.
"I've never been to school before. I've never had friends. It's all sort of...new to me."
Marinette watched as the boy in front of her talked, guilt creeping up on her with every word. Was that true? Did he really have no other friends aside from Chloe? Marinette was always the type to jump to conclusions. Was this another one of those times? Did she judge a person wrongly yet again?
She watched as his hair swooped to the side when he finally turned to look at her. She wished that she could see the exact color that his eyes were, the exact color that his hair was. Heck, she wanted to see what color his shoes were. But she hadn't found her soulmate yet meaning that all the world was in black-and-white for Marinette Dupain-Cheng. If she had to guess, Marinette would say that he had light hair and eyes. Even without being able to see color, she could tell that this Adrien boy was terribly handsome. Well, she thought, he is a model.
When Adrien held his umbrella out to her in a sort of peace offering, All Marinette could do was stare. He wasn't upset at her? He wasn't going to lash out? Marinette thought he was going to be like Chloe. Snobby, rude, arrogant, greedy, selfish...But, he wasn't. It was evident to Marinette that he was quite the opposite. Internally, she cursed her bad habit to judge too quickly. She was surprised. It was obvious that Adrien was extremely sheltered, yet he didn't seem to be expectant of anything. There was a sort of...loneliness that followed him. Marinette could tell that he wasn't 110% happy. But how? He's rich. He's famous. Surely he has everything he wants...? Stop it. Marinette chided herself. Stop judging people you don't know. Still, Marinette greatly wanted to get to know the boy in front of her...
The soft clap of thunder shook Marinette out of her reverie. Slowly, she reached out to take the umbrella.
And then their fingers touched.
Bright.
That's the only way Marinette could describe what she saw next. Everything exploded in color around her. It was bright. So, so bright, that Marinette had to close her eyes for a moment. When she opened them, the first thing she saw was green. She didn't know how she knew what green looked like, but she did. Everyone who had found their soulmate claimed that green looked like happiness. They always described green as a "happy" color, or as a calming walk in the park. But to Marinette, the color green was more than that. To Marinette, green was not just happiness, but the epitome of joy. Green was the very essence of summer, so vibrant and so warm. The vivacity in his eyes was so strong and pure that they shone brighter than the sun. Underneath the brightness, Marinette saw deeper hues of green poking out. They seemed so calm and gentle and perfectly balanced out the vibrant green in his wide eyes.
The thunder rumbled softly again and the black umbrella fell from Adrien's outstretched hand. Marinette dropped her backpack and darted forward. She buried her face into his chest and knotted her hands in his damp shirt. In return, one of Adrien's hands encircled her waist while the other gently cupped her head. He gingerly rested his chin on top of her head and sighed. The action was so simple, so natural, yet a feeling of adoration and love blossomed in Marinette's chest.
After all, April showers bring May flowers.
