A Piece of Him

"Dream Rose, dream." My dad would tell me every night before I would go to sleep. The idea of a dream tended to keep me awake. I would hope I'd dream of being a princess locked in a tower where my prince charming would save me. I figured in my dreams, my fantasies could be real. But when I met Nate, I didn't have to dream anymore. Nate was my prince charming.

It all started when I was a young girl. My mom had died when I was a baby and my dad was always depressed because all I did was remind him of her. So for most of my life, I was alone. I used my imagination for fun. I did have one friend growing up, Chloe. She has always been there for me. My first love, my first kiss, my first heartbreak, everything. One night, she convinced me to go to a party. I really didn't want to go, but I had nothing better to do.

This was supposed to be the biggest party on campus. Now for a small town in Mississippi, that's a big deal. By the time we got there, it was eleven o'clock and everyone was having a blast. After a while, I got bored and Chloe had already ditched me for some guy, like usual, so I walked out for some fresh air. And that's when I ran into him, literally. We both hit our heads together and fell to the floor. We slowly got back up and rubbed the pain away from our heads. As I opened my eyes, they start down at his feet. I slowly let my eyes trail up to his eyes. That's when I stopped. Those eyes. Those emerald green eyes. I could have stared into those eyes forever. But that's when a deep soft voice spoke. "Are you okay?"

I tried to speak but nothing came out. I finally force out a stuttered, "Yeah. Are... are you?"

"Yeah. Yeah." He said. "Uhm... I don't think I caught your name."

"It's uh, Rose." I said. "And you are?"

"Nate." He said in the most beautiful way. A perfect name for a perfect guy.

We talked for what seemed like only a few minutes about each other. Turns out, we talked for three hours! Funny thing is, we could've talked longer. After realizing what time it was, I decided it was time to get Chloe and drag her back to our dorm room. But before I go, Nate grabs me and asked,

"Will you go out with me next Friday?

"Where and when?" I replied as my heart beat faster with anticipation.

"Meet me here at seven." He said before I rushed out.

I couldn't help but smile as I went through the crowd looking for Chloe. After a good five minutes, I finally found her. As we settle down for the night, all I can think about is Nate. That night, all I could do was think about him until I finally drifted off to sleep.

I looked for Nate everywhere, but could not find him, so I started walking, until I finally saw him standing across the street. I started running towards him and him to me. We embraced each other. Our faces slowly become closer. I could feel his warm breath on my face. Our lips were so close to touching and sharing our first...

Beep! Beep! Beep! I woke up to the sound of my alarm. Wishing I could have slept for one more minute. But my heart started to pound as I realize, it's Friday.

Three years have passed since then and Nate and I have been through everything together. We moved in together. We talked about our future together. We would wait to get married until we were done with college. We were in love. I had truly met my prince charming.

Tonight was date night, and the anniversary of the day we first met, and Nate was acting very nervous. We got into the car and started driving. That's the last thing I remember.

"Miss?" I heard a strange voice call. "Do you know where you are?"

I opened my eyes to see a hospital room with doctors and nurses all around the bed I was on. That's when I saw the tubes that went from my mouth to a strange box that sat beside me. They removed the tubes from my throat.

"What is your name?" That voice asked.

"R...R...Rose..." I mumbled before falling asleep again.

When I woke up, they told me I had been in a car crash caused by a drunk driver. Then they told me Nate didn't make it. My heart stopped as I started screaming and crying. They told me Nate died on impact. As more tears roll down my face, they handed me a box that they had found on Nate's person. I opened it up to find a beautiful diamond ring. He was going to propose. I couldn't imagine living without him. With nothing to remember him by. We had just two more weeks until we graduated from college. How was I supposed to go through it without him? With no piece of him to remember. I wish that i could just wake up from a bad dream. But that wasn't the case.  That's when they told me that I did have a piece of him. A tiny little thing the size of a peanut. Our little peanut. You.

Love,
                                            Mommy
