That night, we all went to bed as soon as it got dark, with Dimitri sleeping on the couch because he was too messed up to get up the stairs. At least, that's what my dad thought.

I heard a thump five foot away from my door. Thinking it was Amelia, I stood up and poked my head out of my room. Dimitri was leaning on the wall, breathing heavily. "What are you doing?" I hissed, striding forward and putting one of his arms over my shoulders.

"I'm lonely," he replied simply, leaning on me and smiling apologetically. I guided him into the closest room, my room, and set him down on the bed. Sitting down beside him, I laughed when he flopped back, putting his hands behind his head and smiling.

I flopped down beside him, then turned to face him, smling back at him. "Then you should have made annoying noises downstairs until one of us came down. My dad's a heavy sleeper, he wouldn't have woken up," I joked, and he turned to face me.

He laughed quietly, and put an arm around my shoulders, pulling me to him. I blushed, feeling his smooth skin on my arms.

I wriggled away, and stood up, suddenly panicked. "N-no. I can't do this. I just want to be your friend. Your best friend, not your girlfriend," I mumbled, looking down. "I'm sorry." I looked up, seeing him sitting up and frowning.

"What do you mean?" Dimitri asked, tilting his head.

My eyes went wide. My face went red, and I looked at my shoes again, embarrassed. "Just... go back down to the couch. I'll go with you," I suggested, stepping forward to help him up.

Dimitri smiled again. "You know, you're weird," he teased, letting me help him up. He leaned heavily on me, making my knees bend, but I took the weight and helped him down the stairs and back to the couch.

"Let me go get a pillow," I said, smiling shyly again. I turned, and saw the twins standing at the bottom of the steps. "What are you two doing?" I asked, frowning again.

Nicholas yawned. "We saw you and Dimi going downstairs, and wondered what you were doing," Amelia answered, taking the leader role again. Dimitri chuckled at her expression, filled with determination and slightly huffy.

I sighed. "Let me guess, you want to sleep down here?" They nodded. "Fine, go get a pillow and a blanket. We can all sleep on the rug." I turned back to Dimitri, who hurried struck a pose where he was propped up on his elbow and smirking flirtatiously. The twins and I giggled, then went upstairs. When I came back down, my grandmother had come out of her first-floor room to scold Dimitri.

"Don't you mess with my grand daughter! She's a fine young woman, and if I catch you messing with her I'll get my twelve gauge and blow you to bits!" she joked, smiling. Dimitri laughed, still weak but getting better.

"Grandma! Leave Dimitri alone!" I laughed, throwing down my pillow and fleece blanket on the carpet.

We laughed, and as my grandmother hobbled back to her room, she turned to say one more thing over her shoulder. "Jusy remember, you had better get married before I die, you hear?"

Dimitri lauhed again, loudly, until I shushed him, holding back laughter as well. I pretended like I was going to whack him with a pillow, then turned to softly throw it at Amelia, who ducked and let it hit Nicholas in the face. He stood, stunned for a moment, befor elaughing quietly and setting down his pillow and blanket.

Soon we were all four lying on the floor, snuggled together, Nicholas and I tucked against Dimitri and Amelia with tucked against my side. Dimitri had his head on my shoulder, and it was cozy in our little huddle. Nicholas was the first asleep, then Amelia, and I sleepily turned to Dimitri, who had his hands clasped behidn my waist and his forehead on mine. We sat there, breathing each other's air, until he gave me a quick kiss on the bridge of my nose, and fell asleep. My nose tingled, and itched, but I didn't want to reach up to scratch it because he looked so peaceful. Finally my eyes closed, and I dreamed about Dimitri and I getting married. He looked awesome, with two bright blue eyes, wearing a fancy black tuxedo with a pin of the black and white guns crossed on the breast pocket. I was wearing a long white dress, covered in tiny mirrors. My hair was long, and pulled up in a braided up-do. Then just as Dimitri and I were about to kiss, I woke uo to my dad and grandma screaming.

"Go Lily, it's your birthday! Go Lily, it's your birthday!" they yelled, doing a weird little dance and laughing. The twins stuck their heads up, and Dimitri groggily slapped at an imaginary alarm clock, instead whacking Nicholas in the head.

I struggled to get up, and realized why it was so hard to get up. Dimitri had his hands crossed on my shoulder blades, holding me to his chest, with his chin on top of my head. As soon as I was up, I began to snort with laughter at Dimitri's face when he realized what he had been doing.

"Geez, you perv, go find some other girl to mess with!" I teased, poking him in the chest. He laughed, sounding and looking a lot better, and I felt a weight lift off of my shoulders.

My dad took my hand to help me up, and dashed to the dining room to pull out a chair. I laughed, then turned to help Dimitri up, and led him to the dining room, where he sat beside me and pretended like he was going to blow the candles out on the breakfast cake set in front of me. Twenty-three candles. For a few months, I was as old as Dimitri!

My grandma counted down, and as they sang happy birthday, I saw Dimitri try to sneak a bite of the cream cheese icing on the cake, and slapped his hand away. Finally, I blew out the candles.

I wished for Dimitri to get better. Not specifically for anything, but just overall get better. His mind had been slipping, and that worried me.

Laughing, I cut a huge piece for Dimitri, and had to slap his hand again when he tried to sneak a bite. "Birthday girl has to take the first bite," I warned, smiling as I cut the twins slightly smaller pieces, then my father and grandmother, and finally gave myself the remainder. "Respect the dang birthday girl!" I yelled at Dimitri as he tried to stuff his face in the cake before I could take a bite.

When I cut off a bite, and stuffed it in my mouth, Dimitri cheered and went face first into the cake. At first I was worried, then he came back up, chewing a piece of sausage. "You are honestly the stupidest thing I've ever seen," I laughed, cuffing him on the shoulder. Then Amelia did the same thing, and soon we were all seeing who could take the biggest bite like a dog.

You know, a peaceful morning is a better morning than a morning where your best friend gets shot.
