Chapter 1
"I know its hard Pay," he says.
My head is against his warm, broad chest. I can feel the vibration of every word he says. I can hear the beat of his heart.
"Its gonna be alright," he adds as he wipes a tear that was traveling down my cheek.
It was just earlier this morning we rushed my mother to the hospital. She woke up not being able to breath. My dad woke me and my sister up around 4:30 a.m. We had to carry her to the car. My dad was the only one allowed in the room until about 10 o'clock this morning.
My mom was diagnosed with stage 4 leukemia. She has an estimated month to live. They caught it too late.
This was the news that turned my whole world upside down.
*Earlier that day*
"I wish they would have caught it sooner," my sister Mary sighed.
"Mar, stop."
"What? Moms asleep. It doesn't matter," she shot back.
"Where's dad?"
"Not sure," she says not looking up from her phone.
I roll my eyes and get up. I walk out of the room and down the hall. I was on my way to check to cafeteria when I heard a crashing coming from the chapel. I peak my head in and realized its my dad destroying the whole thing.
"Dad! Stop it!"
He looks at me with wild eyes.
"Dad, please," I plead.
"No!" he screams as he picks up a chair and throws it towards me.
I duck down soon enough to dodge it. He starts coming my way, but he storms past, out the door. Once again I'm left to clean up his mess. I'm shaking and tears and falling from my eyes.
Once I finished putting all the chairs back I sit down in one of them. My head falls to my hands in my lap and I can't control the tears from pouring out. My mom is going to die and I'm going to be left with my bipolar dad. The thought makes me tremble.
"Payson," I hear my bestfriend say.
I turn and see him coming towards me with his mess of curls, his vibrant green eyes staring at me. I get up and head straight for his arms. He embraces me immidiately and rubs circles on my back. I can't control myself from crying.
"Shhh," he whispers.
My head fits perfectly in the crook of his neck. He pushes my hair behind my ear and cups my face in his large hands.
*End of flashback*
I never thought my mom would be ripped away from me so quickly. It doesn't make sense to me. My relationship with my dad is no where near me and my mom's.
I'm sitting on my bad next to Harry as he fiddles with my hair.
"What are you thinking about?" he asks with a curious look on his face.
"Just that she's... gonna be gone soon."
"Don't think like that Pay."
"Its hard not to."
"I know," he sighs.
I lean my head on his shoulder. Its 2 a.m. and we have school in the morning. He doesn't mind though.
"Its getting late Haz."
"I want to be here with you though," he says.
"I know. Go on home and get some sleep."
