Chapter 3

The words I have just heard have no effect on me. I just stare at the cop blankly. Its sad to say that these words are ones I've wanted to hear. Not the other poor people who were involved, but my father. He has caused me so much pain ever since I was a little girl.

"Pay?" Harry says.

"Yeah?"

He gives me a weird expression.

"Is there any other adult or guardian living in the house with you?" the cop asks.

"Yes," I lie.

"Where are they?"

"My mom is with her sister right now."

"Okay, here is the police report and insurance information. It needs to be read over by her."

"Alright."

He nods at me and the cops all head to their cars. I look down at the police report and I notice the place of the accident was hundreds of miles from here. It says he was going over 100 mph.

"I need to tell mom," I sigh.

"She's in chemo now. We can go tomorrow. She doesn't want you to see her like that Payson," he says.

I sigh. How am I going to tell Mar about dad. He never treated her like he did to me which I was thankful for. She only saw him beat me a few times except for last night. He would tell her I deserved it for my bad behavior even though I did nothing wrong. I'm not sure why he didn't hit her, but that was something I was grateful for.

"Are you okay?" he asks.

"Yeah I am."

Harry knows what he did in the past. My dad left the house after every time he hit me. Harry would always come pick me up after it happened. My mom has no clue about it either. It was always whenshe wasn't home and I was too afraid to tell her because of what my dad might have been capable of.

"I'm glad he's gone," I mutter.

"I know," he says lowly.

"C'mon, lets go eat at your place."

"We don't have to if you aren't up for it," he suggests.

"No, I want to."

"If you insist," he smiles trying to lighten the mood.

We climb into his truck and head to his place. I fold up the papers and put them in the glovebox.

"You're so strong Pay."

I look at him and he catches my eyes.

"You have been through so much and still remain a strong person. God damn I wish I could do that."

"Harry you're strong."

We pull into his drive way and I smile at the sight of my favorite place to be.

"In a sense, but not like you."

I look at him. He's looking me in the eyes and I push his long curls behind his ear. He smiles that cheeky grin of his and leans over so his forehead is touching mine. He cups my face with his hands and kisses me.

Someone knocks on his window and we turn to see Gemma smiling at us and shaking her head. She was walking in from her car. We start laughing and I feel my cheeks turn red. Harry kills the engine and hops out to open my door.

"My lady," he says holding his hand out for me.

I start cracking up and he gives me a pouty look which makes me laugh even more.
