The sky was drenched in a profane-black color as a horrific melody of death filled the air. There were howls and screeching circulating the battleground as the once green earth became covered in crimson red and limp bodies. Their cold hands gripped the steel of the weapons as each being fired and yelled out orders. Running for cover, grenades being tossed in every direction, and some with missing limbs crawling to safety, August's heart pounded in his chest as he watched the life of his friends be stripped from them right before his eyes.

The harsh wind whipped at his face as his eyes searched the scene frantically as his soldiers yelled for orders and help. A simple mission turned into a disheartening ambush and August now had twenty extra bodies on his hand for not turning around when he felt he should have.

A storm of bullets whizzed and spurted into the air as ember-red blood oozed from the enemies. August and his team moved forward. Still firing. Still yelling commands. Grabbing the injured and guiding them to safety. Ducking and reloading when needed.

The gunshots were lessening from the opposing side, making it easier for August and his team to continue surging forward. It felt as if they were being attacked by a swarm of bees or hungry hyenas but they proceeded. Firing. Ducking. Crawling. Waiting it out. Thinking of returning home and honoring the fallen, thirty minutes had gone by before the group had finally moved in and cornered their enemies.

Hearts racing. Sweat trickled down their forehead and neck, August whistled as he reloaded his gun for the sixth time. Fear was eating at him and he knew he would either make it out or go out trying but he had someone at home waiting on him; his leading lady. The constant howling and screeching made the battle seem more perilous as the men continued pushing forward.

Making it down to the last three of their opponents, August stared death in the face as he rose his gun and fired without warning. His men rushed over to retrieve their captured battle brothers and August stood, wiping the blood and sweat from his forehead as he looked up to the sky and exhaled. His heart was heavy. His thoughts were loud and the constant flashes of bodies dropping replayed in his head.

"Major!"

Glancing in the direction of the voice, August's eyes landed on a little girl running his way with her face covered. August didn't notice the AK she had under her gown until she removed it. Completely frozen, August stood there with his finger on the trigger but no sign of him ever wanting to press on it.

"Major!" his battle brother yelled again as he drew his gun.

The little girl fired but August was tackled to the side. That didn't stop her from lunging at him and without warning and remorsefully, August and his battle brother emptied their clip into her small frame. August lay there with his ears ringing and his eyes watering as he tried to figure out what the hell he just did. Did he really just kill a child?

"Sir!" the soldier yelled but August lay there staring at the dead child as his hands began shaking.

He just killed a child. How was he supposed to come back from that?

"Alsina!"

Realizing that he had mentally checked out, they pulled August up and pulled him to the jeep and his eyes never once left the dead. Yeah, she was going to shoot him but that's not the way he viewed it. She was a child. Most likely forced into a life she knew nothing about. Forced to protect what was hers just like they were instructed and forced to do inhumane things. How was he supposed to get over that?
