Chapter One- Bad Luck
Jenny let out a long sigh, letting her head rest into the palm of her hand in exasperation. She had been searching for a place to live for months. Her one year contract with the landlord was one week away from expiring and the landlord was a strict man. Being a sixty-year-old Marine could do that to you. They thrive on orderliness and routine. There was no asking for an extension, he'd never give it to her. Even though she'd always payed her rent on time, kept it orderly like he wanted and never had too many people over or parties, he still wouldn't budge on an extension. She had to leave.
Jenny could feel her anxiety rising, swirling like that of a coming raging storm. A tight little knot formed in the pit of her stomach. She wasn't sure what she was going to do if she didn't find a place to live, and quick. Wiping the tear that escaped her eye, she stood up and went to her brown four drawer dresser and pulled out some fresh clothing. She needed to get a move on. There weren't too many places for rent nowadays, not one she could afford anyways.
After thirty minutes Jenny was fully dressed, make up put on, and ready to go out the door. She knew just aimlessly wondering around Edinburgh, Scotland on foot was a bad idea, but somewhere inside of her she knew she couldn't give up searching for her new home. One week is all she has left and she wasn't going to waste one moment sitting around searching in the newspaper any longer. There was never any luck house hunting in the papers. When she went to call the owners in the ads, the house was already rented.
Dusk was approaching, another hour and a half and the sky would be lit up by the light of the moon. A gentle breeze blew whipping around Jenny's blonde hair and causing a mini tornado of scattered paper that lay strewn on the sidewalk. Jenny shook her head wondering why people couldn't just thrown their trash in a garbage bin like everyone else.
Jenny walked ten blocks, her feet was in tremendous pain and her legs felt like jelly, her calves were burning and her heels felt like she was stepping on jagged rocks. Up ahead, she noticed a bench and took the opportunity to sit for just a few minutes. As she approached, a man sat down on the green bench. Warily, Jenny carefully examined the man and decided he was no threat to her.
In fact, he had on a deep black suit and tie. His shoes were shining like they had just been polished, his black hair was slicked back in perfection and he had on a gold watch to boot. After inspecting the man, Jenny sat down beside him. She stole a sideways glance at his face from the corner of her eye and couldn't stop her mouth from parting and her cheeks heating.
Facial structure was sculpted to perfection. Strong cheek bones, a perfect nose and luscious pink lips. What really flared up her attraction towards this strange man was his eyes, bright greenish blue. They almost seemed to glow as the minutes ticked by.
He sat there reading a newspaper like it was an everyday routine. He couldn't have been more than twenty-eight-years old. Only two years older then herself. But she knew you could never tell a persons age just by looking at them. Jenny couldn't focus on anything else at the moment, the search for her next home momentarily forgotten as this man consumed her thoughts.
A fierce wind picked up causing the newspaper he was holding to blow furiously into the air, ascending further and further into the ever darkening sky. Jenny stood up looking into the darkening sky but saw no papers descend from the cloud. How strange she thought that was. Why would the papers not return?
