The next day Kurt returned to school. Burt didn't want him to yet, but he couldn't risk falling asleep again.
He didn't say anything all day, a deadened look in his eyes. He was exhausted. He was wearing Elise's leather jacket, which got him a few funny looks, since leather jackets weren't really his style.
When Karofsky tried to taunt him he was oblivious, so much that Karofsky got frustrated and left. He was a bit worried about him, but what could he do?
Eventually it was time for glee club, and Kurt was immediately asked where he was yesterday. "Long story." He said tonelessly, sitting in his normal seat.
Everyone exchanged worried looks. What was wrong? Finn wasn't there yet, they couldn't ask him.
"Is Burt okay?" Mercedes asked cautiously. That's the only time Kurt had been nearly this comatose.
"He's fine."
Puck walked in, immediately sensing the subdued atmosphere. "Woah, who died?" He asked jokingly, taking his seat.
Kurt buried his face in his hands, trying to not cry. He'd be holding back tears all day, everything here reminded him of her.
"Kurt?" Quinn asked gently.
"Elise." He said, voice muffled be his hands.
Rachel frowned in confusion. "What?"
"Puck asked who died."
Everyone went silent at this. Kurt sniffed, looking up. "I'm sorry, I can't do this." He picked up his bag and left, running into Finn at the doorway but just continuing.
Finn looked between Kurt's retreating figure and the glee club, before taking his seat and sighing.
"Finn, what's going on with him? He said someone died?" Rachel asked her boyfriend worriedly.
"He was walking with Elise, his best friend. He couldn't talk about it for long without, well, breaking down. She was shot, and he saw the whole thing. That leather jacket is hers." Finn explained sadly- he didn't know Elise that well, but he knew that she and Kurt were the best of friends.
Everyone was speechless- not in a good way. Kurt saw someone get shot and die, what are they supposed to say to that?
Rachel was the first to speak up, her voice hushed. "He watched her die?"
Finn nodded. "I'm really worried about him. He fell asleep for about five minutes and woke up screaming. Other than that he hasn't slept since, he's afraid to."
