chapter 1

One worm night 4 children stood infront of a bakery. No one knew them. No one knew were they came from.
the bakers wife saw them first, as they stood looking in the window of her store . The little boy was looking at the cakes. The big boy was looking at the loave of bread. The two girls were looking at the cookies. Now the bakers wife didnt like cildren, especially boys."the cake is good, jesse" said the 5 year old boy to his older sister. "Yes Benny" said jesse "but bread is much better for you. Isnt it henry." "Oh yes " said henry. Cake is bad. "I like bread best anyways" said Violet. Violet was 10 and had brown hair and brown eyes. "Thats just like you" henry said to violet. "Lets go in the bakery, mabey they will let us stay hear the night. The bakers wife looked up as the children came in.
"we would like 3 loaves of bread" jesse said. She smiled politely at the woman. The women did not smile back. She looked at henry as he dug in his pocket for change. The woman looked cross but she sold them the bread. Jesse was looking around. She saw that there was a red bench under each of the front windows.
"Would you let us sleep here tonight. We could sleep on those red benches. In the morning we could help you with dishes. Now the women liked this. She hated doing dishes.

She would like to have a big boy help her with her work. "Were are you father and mother?" She asked. "They are dead" henry said. "We have a grandfather in greenfeild but we dont like him" said benny. Jesse put her hand over benny's mouth. "Oh benny" said the women "why dont you like him?" "He is our fathers father, he didnt like our mother so we dont think he will like us."said henry. "Did you ever see him?" She asked. "No" said henry. "Than why do you think he dosnt like you?" "He never came to see us." Henry said. "Were did you live before you came here?" She asked. None of the kids would tell her though. "We will get along all right, said violet, we only want to stay 1 night."
"You may stay here the night," said the women "in the morning we will see what we can do." Henry thanked her politely. "We are all tierd and hungry," henry said as he cut one of the loaves of bread. The women walted away to here room and shut the door behind her.
After dinner of bread the children layed down. Before long benny and violet were sleeping. Jesse and henry however did not fall asleep. A little while after herny and jesse heard the woman talking to her husband. "The 3 older ones i can keep, but the yonger one will have to go to an orphanage." Said the woman. "I agrey," said her husband.
Jesse and henry whated till the baker and his wife went to sleep. Then jesse said to henry "we can not let them take benny we must flee." "Yes indeed," said henry "by morning we must be far away or they will find us. Jesse sat up thinking." Our cloths a bar of soap and towels are in the sack. Violet has here work bag and we have 2 loaves of bread. You have the money right?" "Yes i have allmost 4 dollars. "You must carry benny, he will cry if we wake him up. I will wake violet" said jesse."come violet, we are going to run away. If we dont they will take benny to a childrens home." Violet woke up and roled off the bench without a sound.
