2 Months Later
"I remember when Miranda was like eight and she couldn't stay the night at my house so we snuck out at midnight and ran around the neighborhood in our pajamas. Then the neighbor came out with a broom and started screaming at us," I said with a laugh. Miranda, Aaron, Shawn, and I had all been sitting in a circle of blankets on the private beach behind Aaron and Miranda's house. The fire that sat in the center of our circle crackled and sparked. Miranda smiled knowingly at me and I waited for someone to crack a joke. Aaron snuggled closer to his girlfriend and kissed her cheek. I smiled and felt Shawn kiss my head.
"I'm glad we can do things like this without the fear of being taken again," Shawn announced. I looked up at him and smiled. "And being able to hold my wife safely in my arms is my greatest accomplishment." he said lovingly. I scooted even closer too him and he wrapped both arms around me. We stayed like this for the remainder of the night.
The next morning was hectic. Miranda and Aaron had stayed the night in the guest room since they were too lazy to walk across the street to their own house. I had woken up Mir and left the boys asleep upstairs. I grabbed a paper towel and a green Sharpie off of the counter and wrote down a few words.
Shawn + The Other Guy
Out at the store.
Be back soon
Love ya,
-Katie + Mir
Mir read it over and laughed at me calling Aaron "The Other Guy". I slipped on a pair of flip flops and grabbed my car keys. Heading towards the car, I almost tripped on the curb and Miranda laughed hysterically.
"Shut the hell up," I snapped playfully. She got into my car with a sly grin.
"What do we need at the store?" she asked as I drove towards the town square. "Tampons?"
"No Mir, we need fruit for their breakfast." I said with a laugh in my tone. She shrugged as I parked the car at a little fruit shop. We walked into the open little store and grabbed a cart.
"We need strawberries, bananas, mangos, pineapples, apples, kiwi, star-fruit, and grapes." I announced as we gazed at the fruits and vegetables. Miranda grabbed a tub of strawberries and placed them in her cart while grabbed a bunch of bananas and grapes and placed them in mine. She cradled pineapple in the crook of her free arm and I began to place mangos in a plastic bag. She searched for the apples and kiwi while I asked the owner about star-fruit.
"Yes ma'am we do have those," the small woman told me. She began walking towards the front of the shop, so I took that as a sign to follow her. She grabbed a plastic bag and placed a greenish fruit into it.
"How many?" she asked with her thick Indian accent.
"5 please," I told her. She gently put five star-fruit into my bag then handed to me to place in the cart. I thanked her then walked over to Miranda.
"Did you get everything?" I asked. She nodded and smiled at me. I took her arm and led her to the old lady again to pay.
"You find what you need?" she asked happily. We both nodded and I began to take money out of my back pocket.
"Oh no, you take for free," the woman said, gently pushing my hand back. "I give you fruit for free 'cause you nice lady," she said with a toothless grin.
"Oh no, ma'am. I really want to pay!" I said, trying to hand her the money again.
"Learn to accept good things in life. They no come often," She said wisely. "Ah! Hello!" she said, turning her attention to another customer. She slowly hobbled away from us with the brightest smile.
