"Grandfather?" asked a little boy. "May I ask you a question?"
"Why surely, my young dear Lowell. Come here. Sit on my lap."
Little Lowell climbed onto the frail legs of his grandfather's knees, who was slowly moving back and forth in his rocking chair.
"Now, what was your question?" Grandfather asked him gently, after a respectable amount of time.
"What is an adventure?"
His grandfather's eyes twinkled. "Now that, my dear boy, is a hard question, without an easy direct answer. Many people say it is an exciting or just a very unusual experience. Others say it is just a bold undertaking in something exciting."
Lowell looked up to his grandfather. "But what's your definition?"
Grandfather smiled. "Words cannot truly explain everything, my dear Lowell. Only what is inside can. True feelings and emotions can tell what the most complex word could never explain." Grandfather paused. "But, for you Lowell, I shall tell you to the best of my abilities."
Grandfather took a deep breath and sighed. "First, though, I must tell you the meaning of peace."
Lowell listened quietly.
"Peace, is harmony, Lowell. It keeps us calm. It feels warm and helps us when we are in need of control or connection. It fills the parts of our lives which we don't spend using for fun or amusement. It helps us gain focus. It helps us to gain control. It gives us rest. It gives us hope. The warmth of peace's rays is what keeps us alive."
"Now, adventure." Grandfather paused. "Adventure is exploring the uncharted, the new things, things you haven't seen or have done before or just making it better or perfecting it. It is encountering different paths, and making your best choice, even if it's not the best decision possible. As long as you can be satisfied with it."
There was a long silence as the little boy sat on his grandfather's knees, trying to understand what he said.
"Lowell, the difference between them are, it is very hard to have one going on in your life without the other not. It is hard to have peace when on an adventure, but it is also just as hard to have adventure with peace."
"So we can't have any adventure here?" Lowell asked, pointing his tiny fingers to the green meadow, the light, green forest, the river, the house.
His grandfather tilted his head to the side. "It'll be hard to have an adventure here, unless adventure itself is thrown at you, my dear boy." He raised a finger. "But, you can always have fun making an adventure."
"So are you saying I can make my own adventures here, grandfather?"
His grandfather smiled and nodded. "As far as your imagination and creativity can go, my sweet Lowell."

Later in the afternoon.
"What did you tell Lowell earlier?" asked his wife, drying her hands with a cloth. "He's been running around the meadow for the whole day."
"I told him what he wanted." He answered, his eyes on the horizon. The sun was setting, the last few rays coloring the skies of the meadow.
Wringing the cloth, his wife said, "I'm worried Nell."
"Oh?"
"I'm worried that he may hurt himself. There are many dangerous things in the world out there."
There was a slight silence. "I know."
"You don't think he'll be that naïve, do you? To hurt himself that badly? Or what if he breaks a bone in the forest? He'll be helpless."
"Even if he did, he'd still be safe," said Grandfather. "You know he will."
"Even still, then he'd find out..." she was silent.
They were silent.
"Do you think he ever will? Find out about his parents?" she asked.
"I don't know."
"What of his future?"
"We can only hope, my dear, that what people say about changing their destiny is true."
They were silent again.
"Perhaps you should explain Hope and Destiny to him as well."
"All in due time, darling."
