The Other Side

Frisk took her first step through the newly opened door. The ground felt wet and cold beneath her bare feet. Perhaps she should have grabbed some shoes. Behind her, the door shuddered and closed much faster than it had opened. No turning back now.

The other side wasn't nearly as interesting or comforting as when Frisk had been with Toriel. All it was was a tunnel with a few lights near the door only. Everything beyond the door was lost in the darkness. Frisk looked around but didn't see the man that Toriel had been talking to.

With only one way to go, Frisk stepped into the darkness. She walked and walked, only able to hear the sounds of her own feet taking her forward. Occasionally, she tripped on an uneven ridge. She lost one of her desserts to the darkness.

Slowly, the tunnel got colder. She was glad to have grabbed the second sweater but now really wished she had gone back for shoes. Her feet got colder and colder until she couldn't tell if her feet were touching the ground anymore.

Light trickled through. Frisk ran to it as fast as she could. Unfortunately, her tripping rate doubled due to her numb feet. The tunnel opened up to reveal a frozen winter land. Inches upon inches of powdery snow layered up the ground so that everywhere below Frisk's knees would be victim to the freezing temperatures. The trees glistened with iced branches and icicles.

Feeling both brave and stupid, Frisk trudged through the knee-high snow. Someone approached from behind her.

"What do you think you're doing?"

Frisk froze, both literally and metaphorically. She recognized that voice as the man from the other side. He sounded much more intimidating now.

"Why were you messing around that cavern, kid?"

Slowly, Frisk turned around. She did not see what she had expected.

Frisk thought that all monsters were twice as tall as her, with the possible exception of the younger ones, but he was just an inch or two taller if that. He wore a skeleton mask over his hands and face. His eyes glowed a light blue through the small eye holes.

"Y-you're T-Toriel'ssssss friend-d-d-d," Frisk stuttered.

"I'm who?"

"Y-you're the t-t-talk-k-king wall."

"Talking wall? Wait a second."

The man gripped her shoulder. "Are you a human?"

Frisk's lips froze shut. She collapsed into the snow. The man picked her up and carried her away. It looks like you were right. The human did make it through, he thought.

. . .

Frisk woke up wrapped in a warm and cuddly blanket. She relished the heat and comfort so much that she almost didn't want to leave the fuzzy grasp of the comforter. Unfortunately, her curiosity got the better of her when she heard voices coming from beneath her feet.

For a moment, she thought she was back in Toriel's house, but quickly realized how wrong she was when she could easily get out of bed without jumping. Her feet felt swollen, most likely from the intense cold they had been through. Gently, she walked out of her room, into the hallway, and down the stairs.

When she got to the lower level, she saw some bunny woman standing at a desk with a tiny bunny person running around her paws. The woman turned and greeted her with a smile. "Hello," she whispered, "Your friend that brought you in - he said that he would be in the area. He also said to keep this for you."

The woman rustled through items underneath the desk and pulled out Frisk's large bag of food. Frisk quickly grabbed it and rummaged around.

"Oh do not worry," the bunny assured her. "Nothing was taken from your bag. Your friend was quite insistent on it."
