"I object!" Alex howled to Lupus and the now invisible stars in the daylight. "I object! I object!" He howled like he couldn't say it enough. He jumped out of the aisles made by wolves with wagging tails. He was careful not to step on anyone, knowing that he looked like a fool, being polite in his moment of anguish. His chest was heaving as he ended in the walking lane for the bride and groom. He felt a stab of fear and uneasiness as he made eye contact with his pack leader, now holding a furious gaze.
"What," Eden snapped, "in the name of lupus do you think you're doing?!" He jumped from the rock platform behind Imia, facing him in an aggressive stance. There was no denying that Eden would have bit him in two if it weren't for their Cougarwolf guests.
Alex cowered beneath his leaders twisted snarl, but didn't leave his gaze. He forced his ears back up, along with his now flattened fur. "Eden, Eden please. You can't - I can't just-!" He struggled for words, not knowing how to put in a stated thought, I love Imia. And she can't marry him. And she doesn't want to.
Eden probably didn't even have to hear it. Alex knew that his crush on her when they were just pups wasn't a secret. And that it followed him when they journeyed in their quest-pack. Why would Eden be so blind to that?
"How dare you?" Eden snarled, taking a threatening step towards Alex. "How dare you go against the wishes of Lupus? Of your leader? Your ALPHA!" He bit him this time, hard, on the nose. Alex yelped. But he didn't back down from his leader, even as he felt his nose start throbbing in pain.
A voice sounded behind them. "Eden, old friend, let's be civil." Alex turned to see his old mentor- Kane. General Kane. The third level of power in the ranks. His voice was trying to be calm, but there was a hint of sterness in his tone. A challenging voice.
But Eden wouldn't hear it. His attention never moved from Alex, only glancing at Kane. "You do not speak for him," Eden said in a low growl to his General. "Do not speak for him unless you want to be exiled. As a punishment. Do you want your pups to be fatherless, Kane? Or would you rather speak for this despicable wolf and be thrown out with him?" He narrowed his eyes, at Alex. He was going to exile him from the pack! He was going to cast him out from his family. He was going to make sure he wouldn't even be adopted to another pack.
"Dad!" Imia finally yelped out. Alex had secretly been eyeing her through the whole confrontation, terrified that this would be the last time he would see her. Eden wheeled around, his eyes softening a little at his eldest pup. "You can't do that!"
Alex calmed down the tiniest bit at her weirdly comfortable sharp tone. She'd always been like that, for the longest he could remember. Imia jumped from the rock platform that was made for their ceremony, taking her place defensively between Alex and her father. "I won't let you." Her once sharp tone turned into a harsh snarl at her own father, her tail raised angrily behind her.
Eden look taken back, now with a realization that she would not fall at his paws anymore. "Imia-."
"No! You can't just throw him out! He hasn't done anything wrong but stand for what he believes in! What he honors!" She snapped harshly at the large russet wolf. She looked behind her to Alex, a sorrowful look in her eyes. "What he loves." She added, nudging his muzzle with her head.
"Imia, think about what you're doing. This is for the good of the pack! Our future! You can't throw it all away because of some puppy-love." He vomited the last two words, sounding angrier than ever.
"It's not that!" She debated, shifting herself to stand next to Alex instead of in front of him, though she still had one black protective paw in front of him. "It's not..."
"Then what is it?" Eden had his fierceness back, claws digging into the dirt in anger. "You told me yourself before you left. You said you hated him. You despised him. And then all of a sudden you return and you're snout over tails for him. You made an oath! You said to me that you would do the worst for the best of your pack! You swore to Lupus!"
Imia opened her mouth to protest, but no words formed. She looked to Alex, eyes full of sorrow and pain, full of forgiveness if she could not win this verbal battle.
For a moment, the clearing was silent as wolves caught their breaths, waiting for someone to say something.
"Then you can throw me out to." Imia finally said defiantly. "Throw me out with him."
"You can throw me out, too!" River's voice howled from the audience.
Then Zen.
Then Zane.
Then Autumn.
Four quest-pack members had stood in the crowd, raising their snouts with honor and pride.
Eden looked dumbfounded. He was now at a loss for words. That was when yet another voice rang.
"I resign my will to start an alliance. My son will not be marrying Imia today." The cougarwolf leader, Lion, has spoke with his whimsical voice. "Nor will my daughter, Autumn. You may take your pack as it is, Eden.
Imia and Alex exchanged a glance. Was it all over? Could they be together as they wished now? With past conflicts aside?
"Um, excuse me, Eden. But...what if I WANT to marry Imia?"
Eden wheeled around. "Cougar?"
Cougar cleared his throat. He stood now, raising his light brown body off the ground. "I, Cougar of the Cougarwolves, challenge Alex of the Shadowwolves for Imia's paw in marriage. Shall he refuse, I have the right to take her for my own. But if he shall fight...well..." He chuckled. "May the best wolf prevail."
The clearing went silent. No wolf dared to breathe. Cougar glared down at Alex with yellow eyes. "Do you accept?" His voice rang cold.
A few heartbeats passed. All eyes fell on the jet-black wolf. He stepped forward, tail raised in aggression. "I accept.
