"Please. I don't have it," The girl strapped to the chair said, her fear evident even from a building over. "Please, just-"

Cinder winced as she saw the girl scream in agony from something metal pressing into her stomach. She looked over at Dream, who was next to her, and saw her grimacing as well. This wasn't the first time they had looked in on a torture, but it didn't get better over time. Being a secret agent for the government had its ups and downs, and these kinds of missions were definitely some of the worst parts.

This base was one of the smaller Ghost bases, which they had only tracked down recently, and only because of Ghost's sloppiness with trying to capture this girl. Dream had shot a small microphone into the room through the vents, and from their vantage point of the abandoned building adjacent to this base and some anti-virtual imaging technology, they were able to see and hear everything in that room.

Currently, they were trying to look for the same information Ghost was. This girl must have been really important for them to sacrifice so many secrets for her, so of course UMF wanted some of their best spies listening in.

"You don't see it, do you," the girl torturing her responded. Cinder zoomed in with her binoculars on the torturer, trying to make out her features. "We already took what we wanted from you physically. Now we just need information." She slammed her hands on the table, finally giving Cinder a clear view of her face. "Where is Erickson?"

Dream turned to her, looking at her with the same face of recognition. "It's Phy."

Phy was a well-known member of Ghost, and their torture expert. The fact that she was found at this small, low-security base only amplified the idea that this girl was very important. The two nodded at each other before turning back to the scene.

"I- I don't know him!" The girl sobbed. "Please! You can't hurt me for something I don't know about!"

Phy smirked. "You don't know me," She said, running the long, skinny piece of metal across the table. It made an ear-piercing shrieking noise, and Cinder and Dream both flinched back. Phy only smiled wider, and watched as the girl in the metal chair struggled to get out of her restraints. Phy beckoned out of the room, and another Ghost member, who Cinder identified as Potato, brought in a cart covered in various torture instruments.

"Potato too?" Dream whispered. Cinder didn't respond, but also knew the significance of this. Both of these girls were high up, and shouldn't be here. She watched as Potato stood back, ready to let Phy continue her work.

"It's obvious that they don't buy her lie," Cinder commented.

"Huh. Wonder what made you think that," Dream snarked. Cinder just turned back to the scene in front of them.

"The chants. Erickson's Cantibus Potens Anima. You were the one who last saw him, who gave him back the book he wrote."

"He didn't write them-" the girl attempted, her voice still weak. "I haven't read anything by that name-"

"That's because you don't read them," Phy said, glaring at her. "You learn them, you feel them, you enhance yourself with them. So stop lying."

"I believe it's time for your break now," Potato said to Phy, taking some of the blood off the table and sniffing it. She recoiled in disgust and wiped it off on her jeans.

"No." Phy picked up another instrument, this one gleaming a dull orange under the light. "No breaks. She hasn't earned it." She leaned back over the girl, looking her up and down. "Now, where are your spirit rings?"

"I- I don't wear them," the girl insisted. "I left the cult a long time ago-"

"There you go again, acting like we don't see you," Potato cut in. "We've had agents on your back for months now. You are an active member of Plume Vitam Aeternam, and have been trusted for years. Just recently, you walked into the Sciens library with the books, and then two days later the library burnt down. You know their location, or you know his location, or-" She stopped.

"Please-" the girl whimpered again in her chair.

"You don't have it," Potato said, the realization dawning on her. "And you don't know anything about him, either."

The girl nodded enthusiastically, as if the cuts around her throat and the metal bar loosely around her neck attaching her to the chair weren't there. "Yes! He doesn't know me, I'm just another member. The world- they don't know us."

"Then why was the library burnt down?" Phy asked, her eyes narrowed.

"The book- we don't use it."

"She obviously doesn't read it," Potato commented. "She seems to be illiterate. But-" and she leaned in, close to the girl's face- "You know the chants. You all are required to know them."

Phy grinned at that, and held up her piece of metal again. "So sing."

The girls eyes widened, and she started shaking her head. "We don't sing them! They were forgotten a long time ago! We don't use them!"

With every sentence she spoke, Phy slashed the dull metal into her skin- her arm, her neck, her face. She grinned as the blood ran down the girl's face, pooled at the ground around the chair. Even as her pleas died away and she passed out, Phy continued. The girl's face was pale. Cinder watched with horror.

Phy finally stopped, and looked coldly at the unmoving body. Potato looked like she was trying to keep the same expression, but couldn't keep a little bit of horror and nausea off her face. She started to wheel the instruments out, but stopped and quietly whispered to Phy. Phy nodded, and Potato walked out the door. Phy moved to follow her, but first looked back at the girl's body. She walked back to her.

"So, you don't have it," She said, smirking over the blood. She leaned down to her feet and raised her eyebrows when she saw a glint of gold. "So, you do have your spirit rings." Phy pulled them off each of the girl's feet, and smirked at her as she walked away. "You won't mind if I take these. After all, you never wear them." And she walked out of the room and slammed the door.

Cinder put her binoculars down, and turned to Dream. They both had similar expressions of shock on their faces.

"What- what just happened?" Dream asked.

Cinder could only shake her head in response. There was so much to report back, and they hardly understood any of it. "We should probably go."

She turned around, only to see a Ghost uniform hovering over her.

"Funny seeing you here," the person said. Cinder looked up to see Snowy's face smirking down at them. Dream jumped and turned around, only to also see her standing there, a stick with a button on it held in her hand.

"I- I didn't see you!" Dream exclaimed, reaching for the weapon at her hip.

Snowy just laughed. "Oh, you never see us."

She grinned and pressed the button, and watched as the ceiling where Cinder and Dream were laying opened up underneath them. The last thing Cinder saw before total darkness was Snowy pressing the button again, and the ceiling closing. Cinder only heard Dream scream as they hit the ground before she passed out.
