Chapter 3 #Friend or Foe
"Lucas, I'm you're other half"
Lucas didn't move, didn't take a breath or try to blink away his illusion. He just stood there, stuck fast to the dirty cement floor, he felt no surprise at the new information, if he were to expect anything after the last couple of days this would have been it. It's quite anticlimactic actually he thought.
His reflection shifts uncomfortably under his intense gaze, sliding his eyes from Lucas to the floor and back again.
"Do you have any questions?"
His sudden enquiry breaks through the hard surface of his counterparts stiff response.
Lucas stutters out a laugh.
He brings a hand up to his mouth covering his quiet chuckles, his eyes never moving.
"This is insane"
Lucas steps back from the mirror slightly, takes a deep breath and covers his face completely with both hands.
"I know I'm dreaming, but this feels so real"
He speaks into his palms, closing his eyes tight, he feels the air flow circling him, the ground hard and solid beneath his bare feet, feels the only other eyes in the room, fixed on him.
He could forever cloak this night in a lie if he chose, shielding and protecting his mind the moment he leaves the room. This day would have never happened, your eyes didn't see what they thought they saw, your ears betrayed you, it was but the wind in the trees. No one needs to know. Never ending excuses one after the other until his blood ran cold and his heart stopped beating.
Unfortunately he wasn't in the habit of lying to himself.
Lucas takes in a deep breath for what felt like the hundredth time, and lowers his shaking hands to his sides, he stands firm and tall, contrary to his unstable heart beating erratically in his hot chest.
"What, what do I call you?" his foreign tongue spilling out his native language as familiar as ever. His reflection looks taken aback by the question, opening his mouth slightly to answer, but having nothing to say.
"I, I don't have a name, I don't think, maybe I do, or did, but I can't remember" his mirror image eventually stammers out, his eyes shifting restlessly from Lucas to the floor once again.
Lucas swallows harshly, taking in the mildly embarrassed demeanour of his reflection. The very human reactions he was observing were messing with his head, it surely wasn't human, maybe once however long ago, but right now, in front of him was anything but human.
Still he had to wonder, did he know what he was? was he aware that his existence was due to Lucas being in the wrong place at the wrong time? it was becoming clearer to Lucas that the small white room was the root to this unbelievable turn of events, how he couldn't say, but knowing how wouldn't help his situation much anyway.
Lucas squints, shaking off the remnants of his cold fear, he steps forward.
His reflection looks up from the ground quickly catching the motion in the corner of his eye, with startled eyes he watches Lucas' little but significant movement, tracing every twitch with reverence.
"Do you want a name?"
Lucas looks boldly into his identical brown eyes, staring down the cause of his fear and feeling better for it.
His reflection huffs out a breath crossing his arms self consciously across his chest, he looks Lucas in the eye, demanding his full attention.
Attention he already owned.
