Everyone else coninued on walking while I waited for Samantha to catch up with me. With how quiet it was, I could hear the gravel as she walked towards me. The moonlight was shining bright, so it was a clear night sky.
It was those nights in the beggining of the school year that you didnt have to wear a sweater.
"Hey," Samantha said breathlessly. She pushed some of her dark hair back, and let out a huge breath. Her cheeks were rosy. "What have you been up to?"
I shrugged, "Nothing much. Just hanging around. I was about to head home." I put my hands in my pockets and gave her a light smile.
I was waiting for her to give me a punch on the shoulder or something. She'd always do that.
"Oh yeah, I see you guys ready to leave. Why won't you stay? There's plenty of beer to go around." She gave me a bright grin.
I laughed a bit, "I'm driving. Then I'm not a very big drinker either. Especially in public."
"Ohhh, I see what you mean." she nodded her head in understanding. It was quiet for a couple seconds, an uncomfortable silence.
"What do you--"
"I was going--"
We both interrupted each other.
"You go ahead." she said.
"It's fine, you go ahead." I told her.
I wanted the ground to swallow me whole. I wish we hurried to the car because this was awkward as fuck.
"Well," she took a deep breath. "I was actually going to ask you something. Um, but I don't think I have the guts to ask." she gave out a nervous laugh.
I forced out a smile, "Go on."
"Um, well, see I wanted to ask you if--"
"DANTE!" I heard a throaty manly scream.
We both jumped and turned around. We saw Nina and Richard smacking Chris to shut up. He was laughing.
"Sorry, go on!" Richard yelled from my car.
I turned around, "I'm sorry, Chris is an ass. What were you gonna ask?"
Her face looked a bit fallen. A bit let down. Which made me feel a bit bad. But I didn't do anything, so I didn't understand.
"I was going to ask if you and Chris were okay." she said. "You guys got into it a bit at the bonfire earlier." She crossed her arms and looked impatient.
Her change in attitude really surprised me, "Uh, yeah. Yeah, we're fine. He was just being Chris. Thanks for asking though."
She just nodded her head, and looked at me in the eyes. Very imploringly, might I add. I averted my eyes to the distant fire behind her.
"So...see you at school tomorrow?" I asked.
She looked a bit disappointed, "Yeah...yeah I'll se you at school tomorrow. Um, do you have my number?"
Fuck.
"I don't actually. Here." I grabbed my phone, unlocked it, and gave it to her so she could put her number in herself.
She typed it in happily. This girl really has serious mood changes. Do I know why? In the back of my head, but I don't want to acknowledge it.
"Yeah, sorry. I just have my friends waiting on me right now." I said.
She gave me my phone back, "It's okay."
"Let me text you first." I mumbled.
