A cold breeze brushed through the dark trees in the troubled city of Detroit. A late afternoon, all the city's lights radiating through the thick atmosphere. The sky was an unusual colour of purple, specked with uneven, dark clouds. Fall was approaching fast, already going into early October. People would normally be more excited for Halloween about now, but the people of Detroit had other things on their minds.

Everyone in the city clearly noticed a difference, there was no doubt. Things were changing. The cold breeze would flow through the streets, around every corner, creeping up on both the living and the dead. Detroit had for decades had problems with the supernatural, but things weren't as they used to be. Everything was changing, attacks happening more frequently.

Not that many people knew what was actually happening. There were only a few qualified for these kinds of situations. Luckily, Detroit had one of the best detective in the country on the case. Some even believed him to be the only hope the city had left.

The detective released a heavy sigh as he glanced around the police station. It had been more crowded the past week or so, because of all that was happening. The detective stood up from his desk and pushed his chair under. He squinted his eyes in pain, the ache in his head kindly reminding him of the lack of sleep and nicotine. The last thirty hours had been nonstop for him, not even realising time had gone by at all. He released a big yawn, before heading over to the break room to make himself the 5th coffee that evening. As he walked, eyes half lidded, he suddenly felt a hand on his chest.

"You're in no condition to keep working, detective Reed," a deep voice said.

Gavin, a bit startled by the impact, realised it was captain Fowler who had stopped him. He furrowed his brows.

"What are you talking about? I'm really onto somethi-" he started out, but was cut short.

"Go home and get some rest. That's an order!" Fowler said with a stern look, despite the hint of concern in his voice. He proceeded to walk past him and get back to work, adding to his point.

"You've earned it."

And with that, Gavin was left with no other choice. He sighed lightly again and walked back to his desk and began packing his stuff. When he was ready he headed for the main exit. As he walked the short distance from his desk to the exit, he got numerous hopeful smiles and waves. He gave a weak smile back paired with heavy eyelids. He knew they all wanted him to "save" them from this hell, but he wasn't sure he could do it. Not as things were going now, anyway.

The weather outside was as expected. Cold and dry, words becoming visible. Gavin closed his eyes as the cold air embraced his facial features. Everything was so quiet outside, Gavin just now realised the insane noise that had been in his head the past week.

With a deep breath, he started walking to the nearest bus stop, letting his mind clear up in the process. The aching was still there, lurking in the back of his head. He resisted the temptation of lighting a cigarette, considering that it would smell. Smell is bad, especially when you're all alone in the dark and there are supernatural creatures with super senses looking for you.

He took another deep breath. The cold air relaxed him, almost as if it cooled down his overheated engines. He eventually neared the bus stop, stretching a hand out as he heard the engine coming up behind him. The bus stopped, and Gavin stepped in while giving a small nod to the bus driver as a greeting.

As soon as Gavin sat down, he closed his eyes and the bus started moving. He warm air inside the vehicle reminded him of the case he was working on. He knew he was onto something, but he also knew he wouldn't be able to solve it all alone. And with no other detective with even remotely similar skills to him, he was slowly losing hope.
