Dodgeball

"Straight lines! Steve and Devin, team captains!" Coach Pascal yelled.

I sighed, shuffling beside a guy with curly brown hair. I hated dodgeball with a passion. Normally I'd skip, but they've started calling your parents if you miss a class.

Which means I have to face the hell that is 10th grade gym.

Devin chose the first. "Lucas."

Then Steve. "Matt."

They kept calling off names until i was the last one left. It was Devin's turn to choose.

He looked at me. He thought a moment. "Kai."

I awkwardly stepped behind the rest of the guys on Devin's team.

"Stay out of the way, fag." The guy in front of me said.

I nodded slightly and looked down, heat scratching up my neck. I was planning on leaving the game to the rest of them, anyway.

Coach blew the whistle. "Begin!"

I stayed behind some tall guy until there were only four people left. Devin, the guy I was hiding behind, and two people on the opposing team.

I stepped out into the open, hoping the ball that would undoubtedly be threw my way wasn't thrown too hard.

Mike, one of the guys on the other team, picked up one of the red balls and aimed. He threw hard. He had aimed for my face, apparently.

As i was jogging towards the back of the room, I felt something warm fall onto my lips. Blood, of course. Fucking great.

I signaled the coach, and jogged to the bathroom. I grabbed a few paper towels and started cleaning up my face, wincing.

"Bastard..." I mumbled, wiping the last bit of blood from my face.

"He got you good, I must admit." I jumped. Devin stood beside the door. "Cheap shot, though." He walked to the center of the room.

I looked down, a habit I've gained when talking to anyone.

"I like your hair, by the way. It suits you." He smiled slightly.

My hair was a dark blue, shaved on the sides and sorta spiked on the top. I nodded once as a 'thank you' gesture.

He walked up to the mirror and started messing with his sweat matted hair. He smelled like Axe Phoenix body spray. "I haven't seen you around much. This is, what? The second time you've been to this class?"

I nodded again, moving to throw away my bloodied paper towels.

"You don't talk much, do you?" He turned around, leaning against the countertop. His emerald green eyes fell onto my back.

"I've learned not to." I whispered, turning back around.

Devin just raised an eyebrow. His arms were propped up on the counter to balance himself, making his muscles pop out of his slightly small shirt. His hip was turned to the left, towards me. "They mess with you often then?"

I shrugged and nodded. "Here and there."

He nodded in understanding, which kind of surprised me. Devin was the captain of the baseball team. He was one of the most popular guys at school. He walked up to me slowly, like a hungry cat sneaking up on a field rat. He reached out and gently touched my nose.

I winced. He frowned.

"No biggie." I said, but it sounded forced, even to me.

His frown only deepened.
