We cling to things that hurt us because we do not know who we will become without the pain
The pain is a constant in our lives, a reminder that you exist
But
That pain is hurting you, and some of us have become a little too numb
We shrug it off when a bullet pieces our skin, aimed directly at the heart
Oh well, I should've put on my vest
We act like pain is a common occurance that is okay to be given, like a pill we're prescribed by other people
Here, take this
It'll help you grow up
Everyone ignores the side effects of that pill
The sadness, the hatred, the confusion that come with it
You're fine, here, here's some sunshine to make it go away
But sunshine only hides the shadows
And we do not have flashlights for when the sunshine finally fades
When we are engulfed in darkness others will take their match and run
For how could they share their light when they have so little of it?
How could they give you one when they only have two and tomorrow is still coming
But sometimes you'll find someone who has a whole matchbook, and they'll give you three.
Sometimes someone is willing to fight the darkness with you if they can just share the light
Because even in the brightest times we want others with us
Because we know they have matches to help fight the dark
