Sofia knew that not everything is what it appears to be. She remembered when Miss Nettle came to the Enchanted Feast in Enchancia, disguised as Sasha the Sorceress. Sofia didn't think Sasha could be trusted, so when her amulet summoned Snow White, the latter told her about the time she met an old woman offering her an apple—but the woman was really her wicked stepmother in disguise and the apple was poisoned. Snow White told Sofia that people aren't always who they appeared to be, so it's important to trust her instincts. When Sofia found out that Sasha was really Miss Nettle in disguise, she and Cedric worked together to stop her with a special magic spell: Cedric's morpho mirror spell. It showed Sofia's reflection in different mirrors—and in each reflection, she wore a different outfit. Miss Nettle was stopped, but then she got away. But Sofia learned a lesson that day: people aren't always what they seem.

One day, Sofia and Hugo were at his palace for some Protector training. Sofia was once a Protector-in-training, and sometime afterwards, Hugo became a Protector-in-training himself. When the evil spirit Vor took over the Mystic Isles and Enchancia, Sofia extinguished Vor with the power of love. This was more than enough to prove that she was worthy of becoming an official Protector. Now that she's a full-fledged Protector of the Ever Realm, Chrysta and Cody made her Hugo's Protector trainer.

"Right here, Hugo, is one of the most important Protector tools you'll ever need," Sofia told Hugo. She held out a blue key.

"That tiny little key?" Hugo asked.

"This is a Necessi-Key," Sofia said.

"Oh, yeah, you have one of those, yes?" Hugo realized.

"Yes, but you have to be careful—around the same time I got mine, Twitch the strangling stole it from me and gave it to Prisma," Sofia warned. "That's how she escaped the Terrible Tower in the first place."

This is how Vor took over the Mystic Isles in the first place. When Prisma met Twitch the strangling, he helped her get the Locket of Vor out of a safe that was near Prisma's cell. This Locket was to track down the Wicked Nine, which are powerful objects once used by big-time villains. If all 9 were brought together, they could've given the owner unspeakable power—and the Protectors only knew where some of the 9 were. Sofia and Chrysta were sent to Wei-Ling to guard the Falcon's Eye, a gem hidden inside the sword of Shan-Yu. Twitch did succeed in taking the Falcon's Eye...before Sofia used her Enchantlet to take it from him—but then Twitch stole her Necessi-Key and gave it to Prisma, who used it to escape from the Terrible Tower. After getting her Necessi-Key back, Sofia promised to be more careful with her Protector tools.

"Thanks, Sofia," Hugo smiled.

"No problem," Sofia grinned. "Well, you've seen me use my Necessi-Key before. Do you want to give this a try for yourself?"

"Okay," Hugo smiled as Sofia handed him his fancy new key. He used the key to make a door in a rock and walked through.

"Before you go through, you want to...," Sofia tried to warn him.

"Whoa!" Hugo cried, slipping into a mud puddle.

"...take a look at what you're stepping into," Sofia chuckled. She took Hugo's hand and helped him up.

"Let me try that again," Hugo said.

"Take your time—there's no rush," Sofia smiled.

Throughout the day, Hugo practiced using his Necessi-Key. In fact, he was so busy practicing that he and Sofia barely noticed that it was getting late. They decided to do some more training tomorrow.

That night, on the Mystic Isle of Magical Plants, butterflies were flying around, and they were ready to go to sleep when they saw something strange.

"What's this?" asked a green butterfly.

"It looks like a rosebush," a yellow butterfly replied.

But this was no ordinary rosebush—this one was growing big wiggly thorns, and this frightened the butterflies very much. They really needed the Protectors' help.

The next morning, Sofia and her stepfather, King Roland II, went to Hugo's palace. As Roland was with Hugo's older brother, Axel, and their father, King Garrick, Sofia and Hugo were reading books. Suddenly, Sofia's Enchantlet lit up. A rope emerged from the Enchantlet and formed a circle, showing Chrysta.

"Sofia, Hugo," Chrysta called out.

"What's up, Chrysta?" Sofia asked.

"We have an emergency on the Isle of Magical Plants," Chrysta reported. "There's an invasive rosebush."

"How can rosebushes be invasive?" Hugo asked.

"This is no ordinary rosebush—this one's thorns grow faster than the bush itself," Chrysta declared.

"Thorns bigger than the rose? That can't be good," Sofia frowned.

"It's not—Vega, Orion, Cody, and I are going to the Isle of Magical Plants right now to solve this problem," Chrysta declared. "We're going to need you to help us with this, too. We've already sent Skye the unicorn to pick you up."

"We'll be there," Hugo smiled.

"Great," Chrysta smiled back.

Roland, Garrick, and Axel heard the conversation, and they were concerned.

"Wow, thorns bigger than a rose? That's not good," Axel frowned.

"Whatever you do, just be careful," Garrick warned the kids.

"We will, Dad," Hugo said.

"Besides, this is my first mission as a full-fledged Protector of the Ever Realm," Sofia beamed.

Sofia and Hugo hurried to the stables, where Hugo took out his flying horse, Electra. That's when Skye the unicorn showed up.

"Greetings, my princess," Skye smiled, bowing before Sofia.

"Hi, Skye," Sofia smiled, getting on the unicorn.

"To the Isle of Magical Plants," Hugo instructed.

Skye and Electra then flew upward to the Mystic Isles.
