Chapter 3:

-Three Years Earlier-

George's POV-

When I walk into the house, only one light is on. That light, of course, is in Maria's study room. I place my coat on the rack against the door and sigh, rolling my shoulders back to remove the knots in my muscles formed from my hard day's work. I slip off my shoes and walk towards the light illuminating the hallway.

That's when I see her back as she quietly types away at her computer. She was still as beautiful as I remember. her chocolate brown hair flowing down the small of her back, her petite figure, and frantic moving limbs. She was my wife, so she had to be beautiful in my eyes....right?

"Hi, Honey." I say once I realize that she didn't notice me. Her back straightens and she mumbles something, but never looks away from her work. Her mahogany desk is full of papers floating all across the room. I walk right behind her and bend down to give her a kiss on the cheek, catching a glimpse of her tan skin and glittering brown eyes. At the feel of my actions, she swiftly moves away.

"Not now, George. I'm in the middle of a breakthrough! Dinner's on the stove." She hushes me away in a cold voice.

She doesn't notice my saddened gaze. I trudged my way to the kitchen with a broken and rejected heart to find cold and mushy soup as my only source of warmth. I slid onto a wooden chair and leaned my elbows against the green granite countertop.

To Maria, biology was more important than me. Her work was her lover and I was...well I didn't know where I stood. Over the four years of being married, I had lost myself, and been filled with insecurity, but she never seemed to notice. Maria...the one who I once thought was so beautiful, now made my heart ache with her icy and ugly inner core. It was stupid to be married so young, but I loved her all the same. I mean, I didn't know how to love anyone else. We decided to get married at nineteen for Christ's sakes!

Now I was alone...in a world we should have shared together.
