The Intro To The Five Pillars Of Faith
Islam requires that everyone perform the five central duties which they believed would strengthen their faith. These duties are the five pillars of faith which all Muslims must perform, it's just basically five simple duties. Each of the 5 pillars contain different duties to do in order to strengthen their faith, as well as their religion. Some may call it the five pillars of Islam instead of the five pillars of faith. So what are the five pillars of faith? What do each pillar mean? Why is it important? And what could it possibly mean?
What Are The Five Pillars Of Faith?
The five pillars of faith are Shahada, Salat, Zakat, Sawm, and Hajj. The most important pillar is the first one, Shahada, meaning testimony of faith. To be able to perform Shahada, one is required to say "There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah," at least once in his/her life. Salat, the second pillar, means prayer, all Muslims must pray 5 times daily. Next, is Zakat, almsgiving, Muslims are meant to share their wealth with those less fortunate in their community, could be also known as charity.
Sawm, the fourth pillar, means fasting, during the holy month of Ramadan, the 9th month of the Islamic calendar, Muslims are required to fast during daylight hours. "During the holy month of Ramadan, the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, Muslims are expected to fast from dawn to dusk," (Macaulay). To fast means to not eat or drink anything but, there are some people who should refrain from fasting. The last pillar is Hajj, it means pilgrimage, each Muslim is expected to undertake a pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in their life. Muslims believed that following the pillars are really important to them.
The Importance Of The Five Pillars
These pillars are important as it helps develop a Muslim's character and strengthen Islam. The five pillars of faith is required for Muslims to do as part of their religion. Carrying out these obligations provides the framework of a Muslim's life and demonstrates that the Muslim is putting their faith first. "The importance of the pillars can be remembered by spelling out the word RUSH," (Abdul-Wahid) Muslims are commanded by Allah to carry out these pillars and follow the example of the Prophet, the pillars remind Muslims about the teachings of Islam. It unite Muslims and strengthen links between them as they worship only Allah and follow the example of the Prophet. It also support the development of consciousness of Allah and help Muslims to put Allah first in everything they do. It's also part of their culture and religion. Muslims believe that following this will bring faith in service of Allah.
What Does "Five Pillars Of Faith" Actually Mean?
Muslims are expected to perform these five religious duties. The five pillars are mentioned and listed together individually in the Quran and the Hadith, all sects of Muslims observed and acknowledged it and is also known as the five pillars of faith. The five pillars of faith are basically five simple duties that are required to do for Muslims as part of their culture. The five pillars of faith are believed to strengthen their faith in and service to Allah. "Many aspects of religious practice in Islam also emerged and were codified," (Macaulay). The pillars are the 5 basic acts of Islam, some may believe that it's the foundation of a Muslim's life. It contains the duties toward Allah (God) himself and which the Muslim shows submission to God. The 5 duties are meant as the five pillars of faith as part of their religion and culture.
Reflections Of The Five Pillars Of Faith
The five religious duties are also known as the five pillars of faith and the five pillars of faith could be also known as the five pillars of Islam. The pillars are Shahada, Salat, Zakat, Sawm, and Hajj, it means testimony of faith, prayer, almsgiving, fasting, and pilgrimage. They are all mentioned in the holy book of Quran. The five pillars of faith is important because it's part of their culture and religion also, it helps strengthen one's faith in service of Allah.
