Chapter 1
A walk with my Mom and Dad was something I wasn't used to. My Dad's normally at work and my mom's normally at home feeding my baby sister Alice. I'm Julie. Having two baby girls was my daddy's worst nightmare. He wanted boys that he could teach football and other sports. So he hates my 10-month-old sister and me. Today is my 9th birthday so Mom decided to go for a walk. Alice was in her stroller and Mom was pushing her. I was standing next to her and Dad was far behind us. He blamed my mom for having us, even though I know it wasn't her fault. I hate my Dad.
We stopped at Valpo Velvet's for some ice cream. Blue Moon is my favorite. Mom shares vanilla with Alice and Dad stands outside. We sat inside far from Dad. My ice cream was nice and delicious in this hot weather. I wished I could have more than one scoop but Mom says ice cream is getting too expensive. I'm just glad I got some; after all it is my birthday. Mom paid for it because Dad refused to pay for anything that involved my sister and me.
We started walking down the sidewalk toward the park when my Dad finally spoke.
"I'm not going to the park." He said glaring at my mother.
"I'm not forcing you..." Mom said quietly, looking away. Dad walked away muttering to himself about how we shouldn't celebrate the day I came into this world, who would want to be happy about that. I was just glad he was gone.
When we entered the park Mom headed toward the rocking horse with Alice.
"Careful Julie I'll be on the horse with Alice." Said my mom.
"Okay Mom!" I yelled to her as she pushed along my sister's stroller. I ran to my friend Amarie who promised she'd be here today and we galloped toward the slides.
"Where's your Dad?" she asked, "I thought you said he would be here."
"He didn't wanna come in the park," I said, "I didn't want him here anyways. He'd just be mean to my mom and your parents."
"Yah." Said Amarie. She was an only child and her mom was my mom's best friend. Amarie's mom said she shouldn't have married my Dad, I agree.
"Let's go to the tire swing," I said, "I'll race you there!" We shot of to the tire swing next to the thick forest.
"I win, I win!" I shouted as Amarie ran up to me.
"I let you cause it's your birthday." She said, clearly out of breath.
"Yah whatever." I replied.
After about an hour we were worn out. Amarie and I sat at a bench right on the edge of the forest and ate our peanut butter and fluff sandwiches, and goldfish crackers. Today had been a good day.
"Shhhhh,' said Amarie. "The trees are barking."
"Don't' be silly," I said.
"Amarie time to go home," yelled her Mom.
"Coming!" yelled Amarie, "seriously though, listen" Amarie ran to her Mom and waved goodbye. My Mom walked up to me.
"Let's go, Honey," she said.
"Arf," went the trees.
"Mom?" I asked.
"Stand back," said Mom pushing me behind her. A little Chihuahua jumped out of the trees with a limp leg.
"Awwwwww," I cooed. "Can we keep him?" I asked cuddling the hurting puppy.
"No, we need to take him to the shelter." replied my mom, "He could have rabies."
"Then we need to take him to the vet not the shelter."
"Fine but we're not keeping it."
"Fine."
When we got to the vet I waited excitedly with the Chihuahua in my lap. I decided if the pup was a boy he'd be Baxter, but if the pup was a girl she'd be Jasmine, cause Mom had a puppy named Baxter when she was little, and Mom almost named me Jasmine when I was born.
"We're ready for you Elisa," said the nurse to my mom.
We walked into a room that looked a little like my doctor's office except there was a scale on the examining table and the walls were covered with pictures of dogs and cats.
"I didn't know you had a dog Miss Julie," said my Aunt Kelly, the greatest vet ever, I wanted to be just like her when I grew up.
"Mom still won't let me but we found this Chihuahua in the park forest, he hurt his leg so I carried him all the way there."
"Good thing she's a small dog." Aunt Kelly laughed.
"She? It's a girl?" I asked.
"Yes, and she looks really healthy except for her leg." She said, "Have you named her yet?
"Don't give her any ideas Kelly." Said my disapproving mother.
"Jasmine." I said.
"That's a beautiful name." Kelly smiled. Kelly took her to the back room to give her some shots.
"Can't I keep her please?" I pleaded.
"I can't believe I'm saying this, but yes you can."
"Yay! Thank you, thank you, thank you!"
"Your welcome." Aunt Kelly emerged from the back room and handed me Jasmine in a new pink and purple tie-dye collar. She was all brushed up and washed. She looked adorable.
"What will your father think?" worried Mom on the way home. I didn't care. I was happily dreaming of the fun times I would spend with Jasmine while she was dozing in my lap. This day was going perfectly.
