CHAPTER 1-Lily

"Get you shoes and coats on, it's school time." My mother called from the kitchen. I ran down the stairs full of joy, I loved school. I was in year 4 and so was my brother, Carl, my twin.

After school Carl and me walked home together, it wasn't far, but we had our usual chats. However something was different, Carl knew something, and was hiding it. I was worried, what if it was bad, what if something horrific had happened. My head raced with thoughts until they were calmed with the wide grin of my mother at the front door. Now my head went wild with good thoughts, what could it be I wondered. As I got closer to the front door I asked my mum, " what's the smile for?"

" We have a surprise for you," I gave her a look," don't look so curious, it's a good surprise, I think you will love her-it."

Her? I asked myself.

Mother got her bag and me, her and Carl got in the car, me still wondering where we were travelling too.We went past fields and many more fields, until we went down a small, thin road at the end three beautiful, wooden buildings.

That was when I saw it-the most beautiful thing I've ever seen, it's long mane flowing down beside its shiny white neck, it's tail flicking side to side. I was in amazement, my jaw dropped, I never thought this day would come. Yes, I had been around horses since I was four, that's when I started riding, but if this was what I thought it was, my dream had come true.We got out and my mother held my had and we walk a couple of steps closer.

"Mother?" I asked, questioning whether this was real.

" You can call her whatever you like darling." She answered, smiling at me again.

CHAPTER 2-Carl

My sister loved her horse, she called her starlight, they were inseparable. But this didn't stop us two being as close as we were, we still walked home from school everyday and chatted with laughter and happiness.

Lily had been taken to school by mother, but she told me I had some hospital appointment of some sort."Mother, why can't I go to school, hospitals are so boring!" I asked, annoyed.

" You've got the tests that I told you about last week, it won't take long, it's just a checkover." Mother said reassuringly, this made me feel calmer.

I went along, had the tests, but mother said it wouldn't take long, we were there for 3 hours, and then we got called in to this small room where there was a man in a suit and tie sitting very straight and stern behind the desk.

We both sat down, mother perched on the edge of her chair looking anxious, I was not sure why.The man, who was a doctor, looked at us both in turn.

" I have some bad news." My mothers head dropping and a tear rolled down her face.

Sure, it was weird that I'd had a lot of tests and stuff lately but no one had told me why, mother just said they were checkovers.

The doctor continued," Over the past couple of weeks Carls tests have been showing positive and negative, however we looked on and did another series of tests, as you know. I'm afraid they came out positive."

Mother sobbed, trying not to show it, however I was still confused,"What were positive? Is there something wrong with me?" I asked.

" Carl, you have a condition called leukaemia, this means we will have to keep a good eye on you, we don't want you getting any more illnesses." He turns back to face mother."The good news is that we have found it very early, and we can fight it."

Those words stuck in my head, "Fight it."

That's exactly what I tried to do!
