"Alex why did you have to do that?" I ask holding a tissue to my eyes wiping the tears away.
"I've got to do my part." He says putting his hands on my waist. "Plus I would have been drafted anyway."
"I don't want you to go." I cry into his shoulder.
"Hey." He says putting his hands on the sides of my face having me stare at him. With his thumbs he wipes the tears away. "I made you a promise. I will come back." He says and I look down at the ring on my finger.
"It's so dangerous." I remind him. We've been married for two weeks.
"Hey I'm tough." He says with the smile that made me say yes when he asked me out on our first date. "Also I've made arrangements to get you out of here." He tells me.
"What?" I ask furrowing my eyebrows.
"Honey we live in London, this shits getting bombed in a couple weeks, the Germans are gaining on us you cannot stay here."
"But I don't want to leave." I say looking around our little flat.
"Non Negotiable." He is stern.
"Where am I going?"
"Switzerland, it's about as far away as I can get you."
"Alex I don't want to leave without you." I say wrapping my arms around his neck.
"Don't make this harder than it has to be." He sighs. His uniform is rough, so stiff, so new. I don't like it. "Daisy please." He begs and I get myself together. I pat my cheeks.
"When do you leave?" I ask.
"Tomorrow at 6." He responds and I bit my lip. "You do too." He adds. I nod and head to my bedroom where I pack up some of my clothes. He walks in and sits on the bed.
"Remember our first date?" He asks with a small smile. I swallow the knot in my throat before I nod.
"Yes, you took me to the carnival and got sick on the Ferris wheel." I recall with a smile.
"I've never liked heights, but you just had to get on." He smirks. "I knew that day that I'd marry you Daisy."
"Oh really?" I question.
"Mhmm" He hums "I love you so much." He whispers almost as if he didn't want me to fully hear him.
I take the photo from our wedding and contemplate if I should bring it with me or let him have it. I should give it to him, he needs something to remind him that he must come back to me. I leave it on the nightstand so I won't forget.
"Why can't you come to Switzerland with me?" I ask turning to face him.
"Daisy." He sighs. "You are something worth fighting for, I have to do my part as well they need all the help they can get."
"How will we communicate?" I ask. "The mail will take so long from here to Switzerland." I remind him. "How am I supposed to know if you're alright?" I ask and the tears escape my eyes quickly. He comes to me and I lean my head on his chest. "You cannot do this to me Alex, it's not fair." I add holding his uniform roughly in a fist.
"Hey, look at me." He says but I shake my head. "Look at me Daisy." He says again and I pull my head back seeing his eyes slightly glossy. "I will come back." He repeats and my heart hurts. "And when I do we will have the most beautiful babies and we will live the happy life I promised you." A single tear comes down my face and I feel weak. He kisses me passionately holding me tightly to his body.
"Please finish packing darling." He says before heading out of the room. I grab shoes and more dresses as well as my under clothes and basic necessities.
