Growing up next to Colby was rough, but I loved it.

I was 6 years old when I met him, his brown shaggy hair was and still is something to remember. Even so, it was his blue eyes that were unforgettable.

But we became friends. I only knew Colby because of our mothers, they were high school friends. The kind of friends that went bowling every weekend and occasionally got black out drunk and made their mistakes, thats where I come in. But nevertheless they made it out of high school together and lived next to each other.

Until mom cheated with her husband. "It was a crazy night at some party!" Her voice shouted down the hallway as I listened, my ear pressed against the wall. "He shouldn't have been there in the first place so if you're looking for someone to be mad at, be mad at him!"

"No wonder Jack left you all of those years ago. Pain in the ass." I gulped as the room quickly silenced against my ear.

Outbursts like that, gladly didnt happen often. They didn't even stay mad at each other for long. Mrs. Brock even took a break away from her husband so Colby, my mother, Mrs. Brock, and I went on a vacation.

That's when I had my first kiss, and he had his. I was 7 and he was 9, we were playing tag and running around the hotel room.

"I bet you won't be able to catch me!" His laugh had a chain reaction of laughter erupting in the room; first me, then my mom, and finally his mom.

Joy had filled the room but it soon decinigrated when there was a faint buzz on the table beside Mrs. Brock.

"H- Hello?" She answered in a shaky voice but continued, "is everything ok?" She asked and there was, from where I was standing, a reply that sounded like a mumble. But I saw the expression on Mrs. Brown's face and it was very far from happy.

"Do I- I need to come h- home now?" She asked warily.

Another mumble from the phone. The breeze I hadn't noticed outside until now stopped abruptly.

"For fucks sake! He's dead!" The woman on the phone yelled at her and continued, "Yes come home! And hurry!"

I watched the tears coul clump up in her eyes and begin to fall, "Y-Yes of course.." She cried and hung up the phone.

We left later that evening. It was wet and raining now. It was cold outside and I was snuggled against sleeping Colby with some blankets and pillows stuffed around us.

As I began too slip into sleep I heard the beginnings of an argument. "Why did you think this was a good idea.." Mrs. Brock mumbled to my mother. "To leave my husband at home.. Just so we could kiss and make up.." My mother sighed and started to mumble something in return but was cut off, "You just had to have it your way.. I should have taken a break from yippy instead of my husband.. Who, thanks to you, killed himself because he thought I was going to leave him... All because of you. Your selfishness.. I hope you remember what you did. I hope you do the same to yourself." Her voice dripped in venom. I could hear my mother's quiet sobbs from the front of the car as e neared my house.

"And if you would. Keep your little rat off my son. I don't want her hurting him to." She growled as a tear fell from my eye and onto Colby's chest. We we're having such a good day.. Now I'd probably never see my best friend again.
