“Don’t do it, Tommy! Don’t you bloody do it!” Newt screamed. Limping as fast as he could toward the closing wall. Newt was too late. Thomas had slipped past just as the walls shut. “They’re dead.” Newt whispered. “Go get some sleep ya bloody shanks.”  He said looking at all the Gladers that had gathered around him. “Nothing we can do now.” Everyone started walking back to the homestead whispering amongst themselves. Chuck was absolutely heartbroken losing his new friend. Newt walked over to the corner of the Glade by the Deadheads, he sat down just outside the trees. Not only had he failed to stop the greenie he was rather fond of. He had also not been able to save his two best friends Alby, who had taken him under his wing and making him the unspoken second in command, and Minho. Except Minho was not just his best friend he was his home in this shucked up little world. He had shared everything with Minho. Newt thought about all the innocent touches they had shared, Minho running his fingers through Newt’s hair as he rested his head on his shoulder, holding hands. They shared every secret they had. Silly ones, simple ones, and the few serious one they had.  They had slept beside each other every night holding hands as they drifted off, knowing that if one happened to awake from a nightmare the other would be there to comfort them, placing a sweet kiss on their forehead, pulling them close, gently playing with their hair until they fell back asleep again.  No, Minho wasn’t just his best friend he was his reason to smile, the only person to ever make him feel truly alive. While thinking about Minho he had suddenly found himself humming a song, he partially remembered it from before the maze, he must have heard it when he was little, buthe somehow remembers it now. Under his breath he sang the beginning of the song slowly. “It’s just another night, and I’m staring at the moon. I saw a shooting star and thought of you. I sang a lullaby, by the waterside and knew. If you were here I’d sing to you,” his voice cracked. “You’re on the other side, as the skyline splits in two. Miles away from seeing you.” He chokes a bit, and continues to hum the song, praying that against all odds they all survive the night. He pictures Minho walking through the door smiling at him, calling him a slinthead for doubting he’d not live through the night. He quietly begins to sing again, “Back to the time, you were lying next to me. I looked across and fell in love, so I took your h-hand,” Newt stuttered unable to continue. He hummed the remainder of the song. He closed his eyes, believing that he would never hear Minho’s voice, smell his scent, or feel his touch again. He hoped that at least he’d be able to see him in his dreams. He sat for a while longer reminiscing his time spent with Minho until he slipped into a restless sleep. Luckily Minho was there smiling to greet him in his dream. He gently touched Newt’s face and told him not to worry, and he was still alive, that he’d be back. Newt then slipped into a deep dreamless sleep. Tear streamed down his face, a small sad smile on his lips. He awoke five minutes before the doors were to open. He slowly made his way over to the wall, bracing himself for the inevitable. He quickly wiped the tears away as he heard the other Gladers approach. As the door slowly opened it revealed Thomas and Minho with Alby in tow. Minho and Newt instantly locked eyes. As Med-jacks pushed past to get Alby to the Greif serum, Newt walked away. He sat in the same spot as last night, staring at his knees. He was too happy and confused to smile. He just repeated over and over in his mind that Minho was okay. “Were ya hoping I was dead slinthead?” Minho whispered causing Newt to jump as he knelt down beside the other boy. Newt reluctantly reached out his hand, afraid that Minho wasn’t actually there. His fingers softly brushed his cheek. He smiled sweetly. Minho immediately embraced him, holding him as close as possible murmuring in his ear reassuring both Newt and himself that he was alive. Both boys were crying Newt pulled back just enough to cup his face with his hands kissing him softly, yet with passion. Looking into Minho’s eye’s Newt whispered, “I love you.” Minho pulled him close, and rested his forehead against Newt’s, “I love you too.”
