Nicola chased after the deer she frightened from her standing ground, hoping to get a closer look at the kind creature. She hid behind a tree, covering her mouth to mute her heavy breathing in case she would scare the deer away. Peeking around, she stared at the creature who was drinking from a calm river. A smile grew on her face, she saw deer all the time, but they were always scared away by the town's loud trucks and the punks who thought it humorous to scare them off. She focused on the delicate and fine physique of the peaceful doe, the patterns of the freckled spots on her neck and her pinned up ears. "Don't you think they're just so beautiful," she whispered, the serenity of the atmosphere was calming to the young girl.
Moments passed and the girl quietly backed towards her house, looking beneath to make sure she didn't make her presence so known. The walk wasn't long, but she enjoyed inspecting the life outside her four walls. A clever girl, Nicola was fascinated by the natural world. From the first moment her mother laid a book about botany in her hands, Nicola became obsessed with the green moss growing on the sides of her house. She worked in the greenhouse located three minutes from her small home in Desmarie County, allowing her to continue her research on the plant species in her town. She found comfort in her workspace, being surrounded by so much green muted the outside stresses of her normal life.
Emerging from the door of the tool shed in her backyard, a boy with long brown hair appeared, pulling gloves over his hands. "Out chasing the does again, Nico?" A smile grew on her face as she crawled up the small hill towards the boy.
"Well don't you know me so well," she rolled her eyes, laughing as she stood up, rubbing the dirt off her hands. "Did my dad call you over today?"
"He asked me to give the bushes a trim, I don't know why he doesn't just ask you. It's not like you have anything to do," he hit her arm and laughed.
Smiling, she shoved him lightly, shaking her head, "I wouldn't know what I'd be doing, besides you're a helluva lot more artistic than me. And you're getting money," she sung out the last word with her hands up and fingers rubbing against each other.
He chuckled, wrapping his arm around her neck, slowly walking them towards the house. She puts her hand on his and smiles. They reached her porch, she slowly walked up the stairs, her hand holding his behind her. He tugged on her arm, she turned her head to him. He tapped his cheek, "You haven't given me one today," he frowned. She rolled her eyes, stepping down towards the boy whose head was turned to the side. She gently turned his face to meet with her and placed her lips on his. He smiled into the warm touch, cupping her cheeks before pulling away to kiss her forehead.
"Call me when you want something, you know where I'll be," she told him, before turning away and disappearing into the doorway of the house. He watched her go, then made his way back to the shed and grabbed the chainsaw. He carried the machine towards the front yard, the rattling lead to a roar as he pulled the rope to turn it on.
Nicola made her way to the kitchen, opening a cupboard and grabbing a cup. Carefully, she placed the cup onto the counter and spun around to face the fridge. She yawned as the door opened, grabbing the bottle of juice then returning to her cup.
She heard a car door close, then footsteps lead to the back door, turning the knob. Nicola smiled and walked to the door to open it, her father appeared. "Nicky," he muttered, giving her a kiss on the cheek then heading into the kitchen. "I see Henry is out there, is he going to stay for dinner?" He asked looking in the fridge.
"I haven't asked, but I doubt that he would decline the opportunity to eat," she clicked her tongue twice, then walked to the stairs, grabbing her cup on her way. She reached the top, the chainsaw's sound was muffled but still present. She chugged the drink and left it on her desk, plopping down on the pillowy comforter that she imagined felt like clouds do. A sigh left her mouth as she heard the saw's sound end.
After cleaning up outside, Henry made his way to the door, knocking before entering. He looked around, "Coming up," he announced. He took his shoes off at the door and made his way upstairs to her room. Standing at the doorway, he smiled, "There's my little bean."
She looked at him and laughed, "Shut up, your clothes are in the closet. You know the rest.." she rubbed her eyes and laid back down. He made his way to her closet, opening the sliding door as she asked, "My dad was wondering if you were going to stay for dinner, so are you?"
He grabbed the clothes and looked back at her, "You already know the answer." He grabbed the clothes off the hanger and turned to her.
"Just making sure, now go away, no smelly boys allowed."
He mocked her before making his way to the bathroom, getting into the shower.
Almost an hour passed and Henry made his way back to her room, drying his hair with the towel before wrapping it behind his neck. He stepped into the doorway of his girlfriend's room, Nicola sitting on her bed, doing her homework. He crawled up next to her and laid his head on her shoulder. "You're such a nerd, dude," he laughed. She shook her head and gave him a kiss atop his head. "And I'm proud, can't say much about you." He gasped, pulling her binder from her hand then tackling her. "You take that back young lady, or I oughta tickle it out of you," he gave her a noogie. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry," she screams as he released her from his arms.
He looked towards the breathless girl, her light brown eyes seemed to glow as the warm light from her lamp hit her face perfectly. He smiled and hovered over her, Nicola's hands held his cheeks as she pulled him closer to connect their lips. He smirked, running his finger down her cheek, cupping the back of her neck into his palm. The innocence in the delicate touch of her hands made Henry proud he was in her life, she was his dream girl and more. Nicola pulled away and grabbed his wrist, "Let's eat." He chuckled, "The first one down get dibs on seconds." Nicola shoved Henry and ran, he watched as the girl sprinted out.
