The pain in the girls’ right arm was intensified as she plunged the syringe deeper into her veins. She should have winced at the ache her new infliction caused, but she was a veteran at this now which brought her to feel almost nothing, and it did not give her satisfaction knowing so. She tilted her head upward just as one single raindrop found a home on her cheek. It always fascinated her how it could rain while the sun was still dancing across the sky with not a cloud in sight. Sadly, the rain was also a cold reminder of the light flick she felt upon pricking her delicate skin. Her thoughts were interrupted by the surging of her last stash of Heroin coursing through her brittle, beaten down body. By now she must weigh less than 90 pounds and can easily count the ribs jutting out of her clammy skin.

She ponders for a moment to wonder if she will ever stop… if her addiction will ever fade to the past, when suddenly, ”Hey! You! Get out of my yard you street rat!” a scraggily middle aged man calls after her.  This is the only indication she needs before she wills herself to her feet and begins bolting for the trees. “Uh oh” she mutters to herself before picking up speed and running barefoot into the brush of the forest. She notices that the dark haired man is no longer chasing her and in taking in her new surroundings, she figures the woodland conceals her well and decides it will make due for the night as she brushes around to make a bed of leaves. Letting the darkness slowly swallow her whole she  struggles to think. Street Rat? Is this what she had succumbed to? No, it wasn't true. She didn't what to believe it. Spending another cold night, alone with her only friend left in the world. Occasioanally waking in a cold sweat, praying she would not become a protegee of the person she once loved.
