                 *****

I walked into The Savoy in full acknowledgement that the torture-lined walls now encased me in whatever wrath Adalaine wished upon me.

“Beautiful day for a public lynching” I hum sarcastically to no one in particular.

I force myself to stop fumbling around with the change i always keep tucked away in my left pocket and focus my attention to walking in a straight line.

I feel my body being constricted and look down only to see a pair of perfectly red manicured hands wrapped around my middle. I feel the weight of a head on my left shoulder and turn to meet the beautiful hazel eyes of Terrah.

“ What’s up Doc?’ I ask and wrinkle my nose much like a bunny would.

“ Morning Simba!” She gleams in my ear and I flinch at the noise.

“ Whoa, still morning fluffer nutter” I grumble and lean my head against hers as we walk attached at the hip, nearing the front desk with each step.

This is the effect she had on me. She made me forget about it all. Like nothing mattered.

Pet names were only one great example of the many couple like activities we would partake in.  Taking strolls in the park, feeding each other in public, even skipping along the pavement at amusement parks. We were like a band of 6 year olds. Sometimes I felt that way, like I stepped back a few years. So helpless and free, Unaware of all the corruption going on around you, just having a good time and not giving a damn about a single thing. If only I could go back. If only.

“ Do you want me to wait for you? “ She morosely says with a frown, releasing me and walking at my side. Thankfully, I’m not an idiot and I can clearly tell that she is stalling me by looping her arm through mine and talking small half steps towards the counter.

I wasn’t about to play this game. I wanted to get this over with and put it behind me, the sooner the better.

“ Terrah” I huff blatantly, giving her a 'you’re not fooling anyone' look.

“ Yes my dear?” Her voice claims innocence but she knows I’m not one to play games.

“ I’m to far in this to let go, Terrah… so let go” I smile at her as she recognizes my irony.

“ Okay, ill be upstairs waiting to tend to your wounds, love” she says softly and begins her journey towards the elevator.

I take a deep breath, raising my head high and closing the distance between Adalaine and I with my most confident strut.

I stand at her desk shifting my feet every couple seconds. Almost impatiently, I clear my throat and she looks up at me with a smile fit for the devil.

“ Good to see you Miss Oliver”

Oliver? She never addresses me with my last name. Gulping down fear I let go of my words.

“ As always, good to see you as well Adalaine.”

Whatever she was up to, I wanted nothing to do with it.

“ Quite the turn of unfortunate events I hear, yeah?” She folds her arms atop her desk, her smile penetrating my thoughts yet again.

“I don’t know if I would…” I exhale sharply and finish my sentence.

“ Put it quite like that.”

Remembering the day before a dimple in my cheek dents slightly.

“ Well, No matter, you’re client will be here within the hour so I recommend you…” A pause.
