I'd woken up in our old farm house alone, a rarity since my mother had passed. Going down stairs a note sat on the kitchen table, Dad's chicken scratch written sideways across the paper. Lifting a top corner so it was angled towards me, my blurry eyes focused enough to read the note.
Emergency call from the station. Prep all rooms in the cabin and update the website to full. Postpone any future visits until further notice. - Dad
Sighing, I released the paper and made my way over to the refrigerator. I needed caffeine. Pulling out one of my energy drinks, I popped the top and took a sip. Letting the peach taste shock my tastebuds once before I had to force a pill down my throat. I had a lot of work ahead of me.
He'd done this before, leaving in the middle of the night and returning with strangers the next day. He once was the sheriff of our little podunk town but retired a few years ago. Even though he's technically retired, he still provides safe lodgings for people in witness protection. That's what's happening today. Someone or ones, need hiding.
Now my stepdad isn't just an old sheriff and a baby sitter for people that witnessed crimes, he's also an inn owner. Just out of sight of our house sits a beautiful two story, eight bedroom, log cabin that we rent out regularly year round. The log cabin literally is the most beautiful house I've ever seen. My dream home and one day, after my dad decides he's done being an inn owner, it will be mine.
I didn't have time to waste. I needed to get my shit together and start on the chores. Everything needed to be ready before they arrived plus I had to feed all the animals as well. Thankfully it's spring and everything's a bit simpler. No snow to wallow through.
I started on the computer and postponed all the future bookings. Sent an email out to all the potential clients and told them it was due to a family emergency. We have a friend that also rents out an unused cabin and I attached their info in the emails.
Next, I went out and threw hay to the horses and grained the ones that needed it. I'd go back through and muck the few stalls later. I had to get up to the cabin and get to work dusting. I just had to tidy it up more so than what it already was. This spring business has been slow.
I finished everything requested of me, and then some, relatively quickly. I'd pulled out enough hamburger for us and our guest, for dinner and had seasoned and prepped them. It was part of my "job" when there were guest; provide two meals. A salad was made as well and then I deemed myself able to have some free time and saddled up one of the horses.
Our inn offers horseback rides out through the breathtaking Wyoming countryside, a big hit with the tourist. We also offer basic riding lessons, for people who aren't up for trails yet. We'd gotten a new horse for the program and I needed to do some schooling with her before she'd be safe for clients to ride, especially if they were beginners.
I'd gotten to ride the cute quarter horse mare named Rosie in the ring for an hour before the black SUV started up the driveway. My dad pulled up slowly and came to a stop right by the fence. Nudging Rosie forward, I rode her over. For some reason I was a bit giddy about meeting our guests. The drivers side window rolled down and I was met by a white smile surrounded by a greying beard.
"Good morning sweetie." My dad's loving tone and smile instantly made mine materialize.
"Hey Dad. Everything's all set up there." I nodded to the cabin as I stroked Rosie's neck. She began pawing at the ground impatiently. We needed to work on that.
"Thanks darlin'. Could you give me a hand and show these boys around the place; help them settle. I have to run back to the station for a more thorough briefing." Peeking beside him I saw a light haired guy in the passenger seat who looked to be of Asian decent. He looked nervous.
