It was a loud sound that Jason had never heard before, and the car immediately stopped once it hit Max who had jerked the driver’s car. Jason was on the floor and his knees were bleeding from falling on the hard asphalt. It was a pain he had never felt – a stinging pain and in his mind and in the pit of his stomach, a concerning pain.
“Max! Max! Where are you boy?”
He tried to move, but felt too hurt to move. He poked around with his stick and couldn’t make out what any of it was.
“Help! Help!” He cried out of fear.
Just then, he heard footsteps that seemed to come out of a car door. He heard the feet stop and then they began to run away.
“Help! Help! Please I’m hurt and I think my dog is too!” He cried out.
“Max! Are you okay boy? Where are you? Say something!”
All he heard was just a small wailing. He cried and he felt so hopeless and scared that he just closed his eyes and let the tears spill out of the creases of his eyelids.
He didn’t know how long it was, but he heard a loud siren from afar. He listened closely. It came nearer and nearer and that’s when he began to shout out, “Help! Please! I need help! Help!” The siren stopped as if right next to him.
Suddenly, he felt someone touch him.
“It’s going to be alright. The ambulance is here, we’re here to help you.”
Jason began to open his eyes slowly, it was dark but behind that darkness he saw an illuminating light in the background. The light had soon become so bright that he felt it blinded him, but more in depth. He began to blink really fast, and then held his eyelids in so tight, and when he opened his eyes, he could see.
“Young man, I’m here to help you up. If you would please come with me, we will escort you to the hospital.”
He could see the man’s face: brown eyes, brown hair, an oval face, and a pointy chin.
Jason felt so startled that he couldn’t speak a word. He was so shocked that his eyes observed everything they saw and every little aspect of every little thing. The man pulled his shoulders up, and that’s when Jason’s eyes had found themselves upon Max.
His side was bleeding a lot, and he was lying on his side slowly breathing. Max had blinked his eyes slowly and fixed his eyes on his master. He was in a lot of pain. There were people bandaging him up.
That’s when he realized he was being pulled away from Max.
“Wait sir, I need to see my dog!” He tried pulling away.
“Young man you need to go to the hospital.”
“I don’t need to go to the hospital! Look! I only have scrapes on my knees! It moves! I’m fine!”
“No young man, you really need to go to the hospital.”
“No! I need to see my dog!” The man had to restrain him on the gurney with tight straps.
“Let go!” He kept struggling.
“Max! Max!” He called to him, but Max wouldn’t answer and he couldn’t get up.
The man closed the back of the ambulance doors and they drove away.
Jason was put to sleep at the hospital because he kept struggling so much. A day later, he woke up.
He was asleep, and just as he was about to wake up, it was his mother’s voice he had heard beside him, holding his hand.
“Honey, are you waking up?” She squeezed his hand and as she leaned over to kiss his forehead, he slowly began to open his eyes, hoping that this time he would se her for real and not the same darkness again.
He opened them, and to his surprise, his mother was a very beautiful woman. She had soft, curly locks of brown hair that came slightly down over her shoulder, brown eyes, and soft pink lips.
“Mom?” He sat up really quick.
“Your eyes – they’re blue? But I’ve never seen them blue before…they were always grey.” She said with a bit of shock in her voice.
“They were?” He looked in her eyes.
“You can see?” She asked.
“Yes, I can.” He said with a little excitement in his voice.
“You can see!” She shouted out so loud that everyone in their area heard them and a nurse had to shush them.
“How did this happen?” She was interested.
“I don’t know how, but I started to see when the ambulance came and I opened my eyes. I was able to see everything! I saw the ambulance man, I saw the sky, the sun, the trees and grass, and the car, and – ” He paused, starting to feel pain in the pit of his stomach.
“Wait – where’s Max?” He said.
His mom’s face showed no more joy anymore, “Sweetie, Max was seriously injured. Last night, they were doing surgery on him. Max was just in too much pain. They had no choice but to –”
“What did they do mom?” He asked feeling the tears about to come from his face.
“Max was – Max is never going to feel pain again anymore.”
“Mom, what did they do?!” He asked repeating it over and over again with pain in his voice and slowly began to sob away at his pillow.
The next day, Jason was released from the hospital and right away he and his mom began to plan Max’s funeral for the following day.
Jason had his dog buried in the same cemetery where his dad was buried. Only he, his mom, and two family members who were friends with Max as well, came to the funeral.
Although unfortunately Max is gone, Jason is now able to attend a public school, and had made a few friends of his own, he could never compare them to the type of friend Max was.
Jason’s mom had bought him another puppy which was a golden retriever. Jason had named him, “Maximillion the Second” – in honor of his first, and only friend, Max.
