A/N: This is a story I wrote on a whim and I don't even think it's really good myself but I posted it anyway. Anything and everything is welcomed. (Seriously, I won't get offended)
This was a once in a life time thing. The Cliché story that no one believes happen, but it did with these two. She was the quirky girl with the major crush on the boy that everybody liked. She wasn’t embarrassed to show it either. It’s been a steady thing. She made herself know everything about him. Despite the snide, the feared faces, the taunts. She never gave up. That is until his birthday. It was a harmless thing, so she thought, to put a cupcake in his locker. She waited in the corner of the hall for the precise moment he would open his locker to see her surprise. Her stomach did about three hundred cartwheels as she walked towards him. This, after all, would be the first time she’d ever talk to him. She tapped him on his shoulder and was taken aback by the outraged look on his face. Her eyes were drawn to the papers he was holding in his hand.
All smeared with icing.
“I’m so sorry.” She could feel an embarrassing heat spread from her neck to the top of her ears.
“It was you?”
“I didn’t me-“
“Can you just stop!” Everyone in the hall was looking at them now. Completely forgetting that they had a class to get to. “This obsession has to stop. I will never go out with you okay? You’re not my type. Just leave me alone!” With that he slammed his locker shut and walked away to Chemistry. She felt stupid now for memorizing his schedule. She wasn’t even aware now that everyone was looking at her. She could only feel a loud thud in her ear as her heart crumbled. The main reason she liked him was because she thought he was nice. He wasn’t a jerk like others would have been with such popularity. He didn’t treated anyone like they were below him or anything. Guess she was wrong. For the rest of that day, she heard his words echo loudly in her mind, and each time the pain would come back anew.
I will never go out with you okay?
You’re not my type.
He didn’t come back to his locker until the end of the day. The icing mess was still there and he could feel his anger rising again. He picked up the cupcake and almost threw it in the garbage can he brought along with him when he saw a card. He managed to open it while still holding on to the messy cupcake and was surprised at the two words that started back at him.
Happy Birthday
He looked at the cupcake, then at the card, then at the cupcake again. And he could feel his anger being chased away by guilt. He didn’t even realize. Actually, no one did. He already felt bad throughout the day about yelling at her like that but now it was way worst. After he cleaned up his locker, he made his way to his car. He got in and sat there for a second. Staring at the cupcake. The card was looking at him from the dashboard, and again, he felt regret at the pit of his stomach. He took a bite. It was delicious.
Chocolate and vanilla. His favorite.
She waited with her hands on her lap. She looked around the restaurant and observed people at their table. She was vastly interested in a table two tables away from her own. She watched as a young man with dark hair took his dates hand and look at him with eyes that clearly, even though she was two tables away, showed all the love he had for his partner. She continued to watch as the man with dark hair dig into his pocket and pulled out a male’s engagement ring and placed it lightly on his partners ring finger. She didn’t see his face, but she knew the man’s partner was crying by the slight rocking of his shoulder. She felt a swell of happiness for the strangers. There was nothing wrong with being happy for the other people. She could even imagine them adopting kids of their own someday or puppies and growing old together.
