PHILIPPINE-AMERICAN WAR

•••

GENERAL ALEJANDRA JACINTO

Ever since she was promoted to General, the young (then) republic's paranoia worsened. You see, after her stand in the Battle of Tirad Pass, she was promoted to the position after a display of bravery. Even when she danced with death that fateful day, and even if almost all her comrades died, she never surrendered, successfully hidden behind a rock.

During the battle, she caught sight of her close friend, the Boy General, Gregorio Del Pilar, lying on the ground, lifeless, and it pushed her closer to the brink of losing hope.

The man was, somewhat, a womanizer, but in battle, he was a serious person who deserved better.

So here she was, sitting down in the shade of a tree, late at night, watching the stars twinkling in the midnight sky, wishing that she'll be the woman who'd be able to hold her brother's hand one more time.

She wore her slightly crinkled khaki Rayadillo, as her cap rested in her leather gloved hands.

When she first entered the Katipunan, she took up the alias, 'Dagat', as she was born by a seashore and she was also called this as a child, since she loved the sea so much.

But there was a different story behind that name.

Dagat was Tagalog for sea. Where did she last see her little brother? In that spot where she left him. In their house by the sea.

She stared up at the sky, and held out her hand to the stars.

"I want to be with you, Al. Where are you, hermanito? Saan ka na tumungo? Iniwan mo na ba ako, kapatid?"
