I sucked in a bit of air. Preparing myself for what I was about to say.
"Yeah. Lets go." I said walking to him.
A smile spread over his face. He had a nice smile. It was big and bright, and infectious. A smile tugged at the sides of my lips as I looked at him. He was cute, I couldn't lie.
I was so deep in thought I didn't hear the footsteps of some teacher that was walking by us.
"Where are you two going then?" She asked. She had papers in her hand. Her eyes would quickly dart to the small pink watch on her wrist as she spoke.
Dominic tried to speak but I cut him off quickly.
"Well miss, my mate here has been sick. The nurse sent him home. Problem is he drove himself here. Since he can't drive himself, as it's not safe, the nurse told me to drive him." I lie, putting my hand on Dominic's back.
The teacher sighed and looked at her watch.
"Well... Be off then." She said then quickly continued down the hall. I assumed she had a meeting to attend.
We walked silently until we got outside. As soon as we walked past the threshold, Dominic began laughing loudly.
"What?" I asked, a small smile forming on my lips again.
"I've been sick? That was the worst excuse you could have ever made." He says between his laughs.
"Well, what would you have said?" I questioned as I began laughing too.
"No clue. But not that!" He continued laughing.
I liked when Dominic laughed. He didn't just laugh with his mouth. He laughed with his whole body. He would bend over and grab his sides. He wasn't afraid to show his emotions. It was beyond cute.
It was the opposite for me. I tried in vain to hide anything I did. I didn't like talking in front of others. I would cover my mouth when I laughed, if I couldn't stop myself from laughing. I got nervous just walking passed others.
But with Dominic it was different. I had barely spoke with him for about 10 minutes, and here I was laughing and talking. It took me a week to even reply back to Tyler and Josh when they were talking to me. What was it about Dominic? How come I felt like I could trust him? What made me so giggly around him?
Something in me wanted to get to know the boy more. I knew I couldn't. I knew I shouldn't rather. People at our school were terrible. They would lie and pretend to be your friend, gain your trust. Then use what you told them against you. They told everyone your secret. They'd sell any of their mates out for £1.
I couldn't have that again. Plus Dominic would probably think that I was a freak, all of my mental illness didn't help making friends. Plus my drama at home. No one wants to be friends with the kid that cries in the bathroom, or the kid that gets bullied. All but Tyler and Josh, as they're like that too. It sucked, it fucking sucks, but that's life. I had accepted that long before I met Dominic.
"So where are we going then?" I asked, after we both stopped laughing.
"So it is we?" Dominic smiled .
"Well of course it's we. I wouldn't have followed you if it wasn't." I defended myself.
"I'm just taking the piss. And I dunno. You got any ideas?" He asked still smiling.
"Oh um well, usually me and my friends just go to our treehouse." I quickly let out. Of course after I mentally face palmed. Why would I tell him that?? He'll think I'm mad! What kind of 16 year olds have a treehouse?
"You have a treehouse? That's awesome!! Can we go?" He excitedly asked.
"O-oh! Um yeah! Let's go! B-but um we'll have to walk through the woods is that ok?" I let out happily. Though I was nervous he wouldn't want to go into the woods with me. We are basically strangers after all.
"Yeah it's cool. Lead the way!" He said and motioned for me to lead him.
We began walking Dominic's pace was quicker then mine. He was always quickly moving. Does he have adhd? I pondered to myself, I didn't want to be rude by asking. Adhd could make sense, he's always moving, he has to talk quickly to get his thoughts out. It would be easy to pin the blame on him in class, like our teacher did.
"So (y/n), who's treehouse are we going to? Is it yours or your mates?" He asked.
"Well neither. We found it when we were on a walk. We left a note inside to see if it was someone's, no one wrote back. So we cleaned it up, and added some stuff inside. Now we hang out in there." I explained to him.
"That's awesome! I've never really been in the woods." He told me.
"Really? Me and my mates hang out in there all the time. It's cool, like it's nice. It's fun being in a place that's alive. Which kinda sounds dumb." I rambled.
"It's not dumb!" He defended.
As we continue to walk he told me about dumb places he's hung out. He has a lot of stories about him and his mates. Most were extremely funny. Or the way he told was funny, I'm sure at the time they were a bit scary.
The way the woods casted a light over us was calming. It was gentle, kind. The woods were inviting. Our town strips the life from you, it's so grey, dull. But the woods, they were alive they were living and breathing, and the colours just added to its joy.
Dominic looked over joyed. His smile was just as bright as his eyes. He would pick up some of the fallen leafs and excitedly show me. But his little expedition came to an end as we approach the tree house.
We climbed up the lander into the treehouse. Dominic seemed surprised.
"What's wrong?" I asked looking at him as she stood with his mouth open.
"This is was cooler then I thought it was going to be!" He replied as he fell into one of the bean bags.
The treehouse was maybe 15ft by 10ft. We hung fairy lights, the ones that you put batteries in to work. There was a black rug laying on the ground. A small foldable table with a CD player/radio on it. And four bean bags. We, Tyler, Josh, and I, tried to make it nice. We need it nice, we spend most of our time in here.
I threw my bag next to the door and plopped into the beanbag chair across from Dominic.
