Grandma was always industrious. Besides raising her own children, she often helped with the raising of their children, with all the laundry and cooking and cleaning. In spite of traveling extensively between their often widely-separated homes, she found the time to present each of her grandchildren with a treasure, carefully handcrafted and unique to the temperament and personality of each one.
A little piece of sky nudges a slice of grape
Stair steps, zigzags, emeralds and rubies
Love runs deep in every angle, every line
Fervent flowers dance beside pompous tartans
Orange tenor harmonizes with candy apple alto
Petite, even sutures, row after sociable row
Cottons hop-scotch wools, twills prod flannels
Caresses of royal velvet and sturdy denim
A vision of warmth becomes rainbow reality
Lenient edges promise affectionate winter snuggles
Sapphire corduroy kisses khaki herringbone
Tenderly constructed inch by intricate inch
Each grandchild receives one at graduation
A vibrant allegory of caring, diligence, resolve
What it takes to make a life beautiful and warm
