The dawn's early light shone through the tiniest of tiny cracks in the velvet curtains. It was momentarily blocked by the rounded figure of Mrs. Pomfrey, a woman who got paid very little to dress and feed me. She grins down at me while simultaneously flicking on the bedside lamp. "Hello, darling! Look lovely this morning, now aren't you, " Mrs. Pomfrey says with a warm voice.
I smile at her as cheerfully as I can which was hard considering that I knew what today was. I was meeting my "husband to be" tomorrow. Dread washed through me as I slowly rose from my luxurious bed. Mrs. Pomfrey must notice my reluctance to move, let alone get dressed. She pats me on the cheek and rushes to my humongous closet. A gentle sigh leaves my mouth as I place my feet on the refreshingly cool floor.
Mrs. Pomfrey places the outfit I chose the night before on the end of my bed before scurrying out of the room. Grabbing it, I change behind the curtain I had hung in the corner of the room. I have never liked changing in front of other people. It was not like I was ashamed of my body or anything. It just made me feel...self-cautious.
After disrobing and pulling on my fresh set of clothes and leaving from behind the curtain, I glance at myself in the mirror. I was always told that I looked like my mother, but I wouldn't know. I never met her. I felt the familiar prickling sensation at the back of my neck. Someone was watching me.
My father stood in the doorway,
his eyes locked with mine. "You really do look like her. Same beautiful blue eyes and bright smile..." I offer him a small smile. "I'm nervous about today, " I confess to him.His steely eyes seem to soften just a bit. He steps into the room and stops when he is beside me. A strange emotion flickers across his face. After a moment, I speak. "Can I at least know his name?"
My father looks at me for a moment or two longer. "Noah. Noah Archer." I stand there, dumbfounded.
"Noah Archer. As in the Noah Archer that I knew as a child? Surely you must be mistaken," I breathe out, hoping what I'm hearing isn't true.He nods. "It is true. You are to marry in two months time. He will reach the kingdom by noon tomorrow." I shake my head roughly, but before I can utter another word, he is gone. I can practically feel my world caving in around me as reality settled in. I was going to marry my childhood best friend.
