Chapter One: Quiet is to Loud

Nolan's POV

"I don't want you anymore." He says with a slight laugh, in front of everyone standing by us. There's chatter through the crowd, telling me that the news will be out before we are even done with this conversation. I feel like I should cry, or yell, maybe both, but I surprise myself, and the others surrounding us. "Okay, bye." I reply and turn around walking away from the boy I used to love, and all of the nosey students of Maxwell High.

After Summer Break

"Nolan, get the hell up." my grandma's voice sounds throughout the cramped bedroom of mine. "fibe more minz." I muffle through the pillow. "No now." she is so resilient with everything. I groan getting up with a glare directed towards the woman who houses me now. she shrugs and hobbles out of my bedroom.

"That woman I swear." I groan out rubbing my face. I stand up and walk towards my closet and pick out a black tank top with black skinny jeans and converse, pairing the look with my usual leather jacket. I walk down the hall to the kitchen and grab a mug of coffee and some toast. "Your mom said you need to call her today." I snort at the sentence.

"If she wants me to call then she can forget about it, I'm not taking orders from her." I shrug and take a sip of my coffee.

"She's only doing this because you were out of line, drinking at school, driving afterwards, you're lucky it was a tree instead of another human." My grandma grumbles, glaring at me from the  tops of her glasses.

"I was going through some things." I bite out, glaring at my phone. "Oh please, your dad was going to leave anyway, and Br...."

"Don't even say his name." I interrupt, "I never want to hear his name again." Grandma shrugs and chuckles saying something under her breath.

"What did you say?" I ask looking up from a post on Tumblr. "I said 'it's going to be hard for that to happen when both of you are in the same school'." My phone goes back to the table and my eyes snap towards my grandma.

She just had to remind me. I roll my eyes and finish my breakfast in one bite, standing up I throw my bag over my shoulder. "I'm leaving Grandma." she waves not looking away from the Daily Paper. Swiping my keys I walk out the front door and to my white 2017 Mercedes Benz AMG C 63 and pull out from the driveway making my way to Veronica's house.

"Nolan! You're back?" Ver's face mixes with surprise and happiness, when she slips into the front seat. "Yeah they let me come back from Nevada early my progress at my aunt's was stellar." I inform her giving her a wink.

She pulls a blunt from her pocket and lights it, she takes a hit off of it, reaches out and hands it to me. "I just changed my poison." I say after taking a slow long drag off of the blunt, passing it back to her so I can turn into McDonald's and park.

For a few minutes we pass the blunt between us me talking about Nevada. "So there was a local party spot?" I nod at Ver's question. "Yeah an old dried out pond, every night there would be some kind of party happening." her eyes grow in size at the new information soaking into her brain.

"Did you meet any guys there?" I think back to the multiple rebounds that I had over there, and nod again. "Yeah one guy's name was Ryn." He was the last, imagining the way his black hair glint in the bonfire's light the last night before I left. "That's a rare name."

We go into the regular restaurant to get some food. "How come we never get caught?" Veronica asks looking a little nervous. "Well I'm never nervous, you should try it sometime." I giggle out. She looks at little flushed after realizing I'm right, she slouches and pretends to be normal.

"Is this better?" she whispers still in the same stance. I look between her and the cashier. "Not even close. What can I get you guys?" The lady asks controlling her laughter towards the now pouting, slouching Veronica. "Two McChickens, two McDoubles, medium fries for both and two Chocolate Chip Frappes, extra on Chocolate Chips, and toppings." I say while pulling out a fifteen dollar bill.

Anna, as her name tag reads, takes the money, giving back the change and receipt. Veronica goes to the restroom to touch up her makeup after the interaction with Anna. I stand and wait for our food and drinks. The drinks come first, and I hand one to the now returning Veronica.

"Thanks." She smiles, and takes a sip of the Frappe. Humming in satisfaction on how it tastes. I Grab the bags of food when they arrive and we make our way to the school grounds.

"Do you think he will notice that you're back?" The question is similar to the ones I've been asking myself since returning last night. I think back to the last time I saw Brett, and stop myself from cursing out loud.

"If he does, it wouldn't matter; not anymore." I say pulling into my usual park spot, and respond to the honking horn from behind me with a flip of my middle finger. There's another honk and then the black car speeds away. "What was their problem?" I ask, looking at Veronica who's wearing a mask of fear.

"You just flipped off Carter Bremmings, he doesn't like that." I laugh at the sentence, I mean come on it was my spot until I left. "But I usually park here, and he was honking, you know me V." I explain fake pouting a little. She snorts and gets out grabbing her school bag and the bag with the food. I get out and walk to the front of my car sitting on the hood I take out a Chicken sandwich. Unwrapping the sandwich, I examine it before taking a bite out of it.

"Hey you must be new, I'm Selena and this is my boyfriend, Brett... you are?" I know that voice from anywhere, turning around I smile at the now shocked couple and crowd of friends.

"The name's Nolan, but you already know this." I smile sweetly and wave them off. They immediately start whispering and disperse when they realize I'm not going to punch Selena in the face for being with Brett.

"Damn girl, that was amazing!" a guy my age exclaims green eyes lighting up with humor hand raised for what seems like a high five. I look at his hand and then his face. "Oh my bad, the name is Oliver, actually I was on my way over here from the black car over there, my friend told me to get you to say sorry." His smile was a sorry smile, as he shrugs and Veronica checks him out.

I return my own smile, "You can tell your little friend to fuck off for me." with that I slide down from my sitting place and walk towards the front doors of the school. "He wouldn't like that, Carter isn't one to mess with." Oliver raises his shaky voice a little.

"I'm not one to mess with either, name's Nolan." He nods and stalks off back to his friend's car. I look over at Veronica who is looking more and more like she wants to disappear. "What?" I ask, she shakes her head and picks up her pace.
