"Reed!" Fowler yelled. "My office, now!" Gavin sighed as he leaned his head over the back of his chair. "Fuck me." he whispered to himself. He stood up and walked into Fowler's office. "You need me or something?" Gavin asked passive-aggressively, shoving his hands in his pockets. "Look," Fowler started "I know you're not going to like this, but you're getting a partner. The new RK900 model, to be exact." Great. Gavin already hated androids, but now he'd have to work with one. "You're partnering me with a fucking toaster?!" Gavin spat angirly. "You can't do that!"
"Actually, I can and I am," Fowler said, rolling his eyes at Gavin's attitude. "You'll just have to deal with it, Gavin. Either you work with an android or you can hand in your badge. Now if you'll excuse me, I have work to do. The android arrives in 15 minutes." Gavin couldn't believe what he was hearing. There was no way Gavin was working with an android! He stormed out of Fowler's office, spewing profanities and slamming the door behind him.
He went to the break room instead of going back to his desk. He needed to hit something. Or someone, he didn't really care which. He opened the door to the break room and saw Connor standing by the coffee machine. Perfect. Gavin thought. He walked over to Connor and stood behind him. "Good morning, detective Re-" Connor said before he took a blow to the stomach. Gavin watched as the android fell to his knees, hand on his abdomen. Of coure, android couldn't feel pain, so it wasn't as satisfying, but it would suffice. "Fucking androids." Gavin spat before storming out of the break room.
He went back to his desk and took a seat. He started looking through case files to take his mind off things. As much as he hated androids, they sure did make good punching bags. A tall figure suddenly appeared in front of him. "Excuse me," it said "Are you detective Reed?" He looked up and saw what looked to be a Connor model, but it had icy blue eyes and its hair was a darker brown than Connor's. It was also much taller, easily standing at at least 6'3."Who needs to know?" He said defensively as he crossed his arms. "I am RK900. I've been assigned to you as your partner." Said the tall and sophisticated android, holding his hands behind his back. "Yeah, well fuck off. I don't need a partner. Especially not a plastic tin can." His insults didn't seem to at all phase the android. For some reason this made Gavin tense.
"Would you like to give me a name?" The android asked, tilting his head slightly. Gavin had a few names in mind, none of which were family-friendly. "Dipshit."
"That's not a name, detective."
Gavin chuckled at his own stupid joke. He couldn't think of a good name. If he would've known he had to name something, he would've prepared some names in advance. Suddenly, something struck him. "Conan," he said. "I'll call you Conan." Gavin smiled to himself, confident with his choice.
Conan's LED blinked from blue to yellow, then back to blue. "Name registered." It stared at him for a few seconds before speaking. "Do you have any files on the current investigation?"
"Yeah," Gavin scoffed "On my desk. Get to work, toaster." Gavin turned and walked out of the break room and went back to his desk. A few minutes later, Conan returned with a cup of coffee.
"I noticed that you seem to like coffee, detective, so I made you this." He held out the cup to Gavin. Gavin hesitantly took the coffee from him.
"Fuck off," He scoffed "Don't expect a thank you, tin can." He eyed the android before looking back at the terminal on his desk. Conan faintly smiled in return.
"Is there an empty desk anywhere that I could use?" He asked, glancing around the room. Gavin pointed to the desk next to his, still looking at his own terminal. He sat down and started looking through case files. "A homicide involving an android happened last night at a downtown bar. Jamie Stone appears to have been strangled before the suspect fled the scene."
"Nice," Gavin smirked, chuckling to himself. "Bar fight gone wrong. Any witnesses?"
"I don't think so. The victim's body was found in the bathroom. The suspect must've followed him in there."
"Sweet," Gavin said, standing up. "Let's go, toaster." He stood next to Conan's desk. Conan looked up at Gavin, who had his hands in his coat pockets. He seemed to be relatively calm. " Hey, shitface, I said let's go. And stop staring, it's fucking creepy." Gavin turned and started walking towards the exit. Conan stood up and followed him. They walked outside to Gavin's car. "Where'd you say this place was?"
"Downtown. It's a bar on 45th street." Nines replied, opening the passenger door and getting into Gavin's car.
"Oh I know where that is." Gavin said before getting into the driver's seat. He buckled up and glanced over at Conan, who was staring at him. Gavin felt his face heat up and turned away.
"Are you alright, Detective? You seem uneasy." Conan asked.
"I-I'm fine." Gavin stuttered. "Stop staring at me. It's fucking weird.." Conan did a quick scan of Gavin. Heart rate increased, breathing quickened, stress level: 47%.
"Detective," He said, putting his hand on Gavin's shoulder. "You appear to be stressed. Is there something wrong?"
Gavin looked over at Conan. He had such beautiful eyes. They were icy blue, unlike Connor's brown eyes, and they were strangely comforting, not robotic and dead like when they first met. His hair was a dark chocolate brown and he was much taller than Gavin, which he found both unsettling and attractive. "I said I'm fine, trash can!" Gavin spat as he shook Conan's hand off his shoulder. "Stop messing around! We need to go downtown. Jesus fucking christ." Gavin started the car and started to drive. His face was flushed and his ears felt like they were on fire. He would never admit it, but Conan was very attractive. It made Gavin uncomfortable. Conan was an android. He-It couldn't feel emotions.
