Grace

Joseph wasn’t picking up any of my calls. Its 3 weeks since we last saw each other and he said he’ll call since his family has sent him to his grandparent’s villa in Geneva for the weekend. I’m worried, why isn’t he back yet? Did something bad happen like his father’s jet crashed in the middle of nowhere? Horrible scenarios and images of a lost looking Joseph went through my mind. I buried my head under my pillow and screamed at the world at this madness.

Suddenly, a muffled ringing sound filled my ears. Dashing for my phone which I had dropped on my desk, I saw an ‘unknown’ caller appear on my screen.  Since, I wasn’t doing anything anyway I pressed the answer button.

“Who is this?” I answered cautiously

“Graceeeeeeee!” shrieked Joseph, deafening my ears slightly.  I was relieved he was fine but pissed that he made me worry so much over his long disappearance with no calls whatsoever.

“You have better come up with a good excuse to not call me in 3 weeks!” I yelled dramatically.  He was silent until I heard some coughing and other noises due to his movement.

“Grace, I’m sorry I haven’t called you but you need to listen carefully okay?”  He whispered he sounded serious. This was very unlike Jo.

“Okay, but you’re really scaring me so get to the point”

I sat upright on my bed after he responded to my request explaining the details very slowly.

My hands were shaking, trembling even that I dropped my phone.

What?! This couldn’t be happening.

No. Way.

Silence filled the other line as if he was anticipating my answer.

“Jo, what the hell do you mean you’re getting married?!” I almost yelled through the hearing piece.

He was silent again like he was choosing anger me his words carefully to not anger me even more.

“I have no choice but to accept. It was my father’s decision, Grace. I told you, our going company is going to become bankrupt if I don’t marry her!” he whispered furiously.

“This is the 21st century; you can’t force people to marry anymore! "

This was really starting to confuse me the more I thought about it, the more it made no sense. Something crossed my mind...

“Jo, are you really in Geneva?” I asked unsure if this was really happening. The line was still silent. It was killing me slowly. Pain crossed my chest constricting my throat, I felt like I was drowning.

“No. I will explain else everything after the-”

I hung up on him. He lied to me and now he expects me to respect his choices?  But that wasn’t all. I have been secretly crushing on Jo. It’s not like that. I had a crush on him waaay before we were even friends. Somehow we became friends, best friends even and I still haven’t told him.
