A strong gust of wind blows leaves off of a large oak tree, the leaves begin to dance through the sky over a large rustic village with houses made of aged but durable looking wood. The wind carries the leaf as slowly flutters to the ground and lands of the face of a young boy with messy dark brown hair causing him to wake up and remove the leaf.
The boy yawns and stretches for a few moments before getting up and and heading toward a large wooden house, as he walks up to the door he can hear what sounds like arguing, he tries to make out what they are saying but after a few moments he shrugs his shoulders and walks in no of the adults and elder in the room seem to notice his presence when he bumps into someone and falls.
"Mika!, didn't i tell you to go outside?" a woman with straight brown hair asked
"I did but no one was out there and i fell asleep" Mika moaned"There should be some kids out there now, besides you couldn't stay in here even if you wanted too." Mika's mom said
"why are all the other adults in our house anyway." Mika asked
"It's grown up business Mika, now Go out with the other kids and play."
"Okay" Mika says in a low exasperated tone
Mika exists the house and upon doing so he hears the mumble of people taking farther away and heads toward it.
"Was that your boy Aria?" a younger woman asked
"It was, sometimes i don't know what to do with him" Aria said
"It's a shame he can't use magic, a damn shame" the younger woman said
"It is but he has heart and that's what matters in the end" Aria said proudly
"So Aria, you've stayed out of this conversation for a while and we want to hear your thoughts on what we should do now that The time is approaching and we still don't have enough crops to pay them this time around," an aged man said.
"My father was afraid of this day and while I am grateful to him and the lords who gave us this land, the tax on us has only grown with the population. While it pains me to say this we may have to sacrifice more than just crops and the like to appease them," Aria said.
"You don't mean... sell people to them," a younger woman says in a trembling tone.
"What else could I mean? We have nothing else to offer." Aria explains.
"Have you lost your mind?! We can't sacrifice one of our own to those bastards!" another woman said.
"Watch your tongue! This pains me just as it does you, but we have no other choice, we have to protect the next generation" Aria said."Everyone calm down, lets just have a talk with them. Tell them that this is becoming too much. Maybe we can work out some sort of deal," a middle aged man says timidly.
"This is our last resort. You realize that right? If this backfires we have no idea how they will retaliate, and it will be on my head if it does." Aria exclaims
"This burden won't be yours to bare. We all came to this decision and we will face the consequences together. The aged man responds"
"Fine then. We all made a decision on this. Now then, let's move on to more pressing matters."***
Mika steps out from the shade of his houses deck, the old worn down wood creaking as he steps off of it. He shields his eyes from the glare of the sun and begins to make his way over to the center of town. As he turns the corner of his house, he sees a large group of the rest of the villages children. A tall, gruff looking boy and a trim, proper looking girl stand on the lid of a sealed well to stand out from the crowd.
"So let's get down to business. Oh, Mika, how good of you to finally join us. We were about to pick out the roles for today's game"
"Really? So who's the villain?" Mika asked."Well, since no one else volunteered like usual, I took the role."
"You know Cole, you don't have to be the bad guy every time."
"I know, but in all honesty who fits the role better that me?.""Okay, now who wants to be the hero?" Cole asks the group of other children.
A large portion of the group of children raises their hand eagerly to fill the role, but they all stop when the proper looking girl standing next to Cole clears her throat.
"I'm going to be the hero this time" the girl says strongly "A girl can't be the hero, sara." a boy from within the crowd says said. "Yea, it doesn't work like that, the hero need to a strong knight of justice" a girl in the front of the crowd explains.
"Come on Mika, please? I'm sick of being the princess. I have stronger magic than most of the people here. I could play the hero just as well as any boy." Sara pleads.
"How about this, we'll have a vote. For those of you who want Mika to be the hero raise your hand."A large majority of the boys with a small group of the girls raises their hands.
"So, most of you. And those of you who want Sara to be the hero, raise your hand."
This time around a small portion of the boys raise their hands while the majority of the girls raise theirs
"Alright. It looks like Mika wins the vote."
"Sorry Sara, maybe next time." Mika says.
"Are you kidding me?! Why is it always him? He doesn't even have any magic abilities as far as we know, so why does he get to play the good guy when I'm better!" Sara yells, her face turning slightly redA girl with dirty blonde hair stands up from the crowd and walks up to the well where Mika, Cole, and Sara are standing. She points a finger at Sara while a frail looking boy in overalls tries to pull her back to where they are,."You need to calm down! Just because you're not the hero doesn't mean you need to throw a hissy fit! Mika is the hero because he knows the rules to this game better than anyone else. It's only natural he would play the hero, so suck it up and stop ruining the game for everyone else!"
Sara grinds her teeth in frustration and shoves past the girl and her friend. She sits down under a large oak tree that grew besides the gates of the village. She looks on at all the other children as they are assigned to their roles.
After assigning all the other children their roles, Cole leaves Mika to explain the rules of the game to everyone while he goes over to talk to Sara.
"Hey, are you going to come over and play with us? We already have a princess but I could always use a powerful second in command," Cole bargains.
"No, you all just play without me. I'm going to see if all the adults are done with their meeting so I can go home," Sara says in an exhausted tone.Cole walks back over to the well where Mika is along with the other kids. They start getting into their positions.
"So, is she gonna play or no?" Mika asked
"No, it doesn't seem like she wants to. Lets just let her cool down some, maybe she'll join in once round two starts." Cole said.
Very special Thanks to Vilariacy for helping me edit the first chapter and essentially get my story off the ground I may have never gotten to post stories if you hadn't been so generous with your time and taught me how to write dialogue, if you ever read this I hope you can continue to help me in the future or at least until I can be more self dependent.
And to those of you who have read to this point thank you I can't tell you how much it means that your even looking at what I've made. While your reading this i'd like to ask if you could leave a comment on what you think or even some suggestions I would be very grateful if you could.
I'm unsure as to when chapter 2 will be posted as this chapter took a while to complete I hoping a few days after new years and before i start school again but i'm not making any promises
