I turn the water onto a hot setting to calm my nerves. It feels so good on my tense muscles and I find my self just standing under the water with my eyes closed.
"Samantha ! If you do not hurry up you will be late!" I hear my mom call from down stairs and her voice penetrates my silence and I hurry to finish my shower with enough time to do the rest of the things I need to get ready.
After shampooing and conditioning, and of course cleaning my body, I hop out of the shower and wrap my teal blue towel around my torso and walk out into my room. First things first I need to put clothing on. Thankfully I had picked my outfit out the night before, actually weeks before, so I don't have to rummage through my closet to find something. Sliding into the light wash, high-waisted shorts I stand up and zip and button them. I pull the white crop too over my head and slip the floral kimono over my arms.
Going back into the bathroom, I plug in my curling wand. While I wait I turn on my music and start to do my makeup.
"We don't have to be ordinary, make your best mistake. 'Cause we don't have the time to be sorry. So baby be the life of the party. I'm telling you take your shot it might be scary, hearts are gonna break.." I sing along with my favorite singer,Shawn Mendes, as I stroke on my mascara and apply some light eyeshadow to make my tired eyes look, not so tired.
The beep that comes from the curling wands tells me it's ready to be used and I start to curl my hair, singing "Life of the Party" for about the fifth time this morning. Once I curl my hair to perfection, I unplug the curling wand and rake my fingers through my hair to break apart my curls.
Stepping back into my bedroom I head for my jewelry and pick out a pear of diamond earrings and put them in. I look at my self in the mirror and move my hair to the front, it falls into soft curls on my chest and I smile.
"Samantha! Come down and eat something right now!" My mother screams.
"I will be right down!" I call back at her, grabbing my bag and phone and scurrying out the door and down the stairs.
"Sam, I don't want you to be late for your first day of school." My mom says handing me a plate full of eggs, fruit, toast, and a glass of orange juice.
"I know what I'm doing mom, I just had to get ready." I say, scarfing down my breakfast.
"Slow down or your gonna puke all over your masterpiece." She laughs and takes a sip of her coffee.
I grin, swallowing the mouthful of food I had just shoved in my mouth,"I guess I'm just excited that all."
"Excited for school, who are you?" My mother states in a sarcastic tone and we both burst out laughing, just as Brain comes downstairs.
I immediately stop laughing and stare at my plate, stabbing at a grape. I'm sure he can sense he just walked into a mother daughter moment but he tries to brush it off.
"Morning ladies, you look lovely this morning Alissa." He says planting a kiss on her cheek then pouring himself a cup of coffee.
"Thank you David."
The grape I'm stabbing at rolls off my plate and bounces onto the ground making a small plop.
"Sorry." I mumble bending down to pick it up, I know my mom hates when stuff is on the floor.
There is an awkward silence as the three of us stare at something in the room, anything but each other. Finally my mom looks over at the clock and moves into action.
"We need to leave now if you want to get there with enough time for you to get situated before school starts." she says grabbing her car keys and purse. I walk out of the kitchen and grab my bag on the stairs then go outside to my moms car. I sit and wait, headphones in, until she comes and turns the car on, pulling out of the driveway.
"Sam?"
I snap back into reality and look over at my mom.
"I said, are you excited for school?"
"Oh, yeah i guess. I mean its school so not really but I'm excited to see my friends." I respond, staring out the window at the trees passing buy at lighting speed.
"You must be excited to see Natalie. You haven't seen her in a few weeks."
"We text all the time though."
She looks over at me,"I know that, but you girls are inseparable. Like sisters almost."
Memories since the time we were 4 years old flood into my mind and a smile forms over my face. My moms right, I am so excited to see Natalie, the last time I saw her was in july when we went white water rafting. We talk all the time but i haven't actually seen her or talked to her in person in at least a month, and I really miss my best friend.
We pull in to the school campus and I sigh, the first day to another year of misery. Yay. I peer out the window at the hundreds of students milling around, West Chester is a really big high school. Its only the first day and I can already see the groups or "cliques" forming. The jocks, mostly football players, mathleates, that speaks for its self, hippies, who look like they don't even know what the word hygiene is, goths, and then there's my favorite, the "populars'. You see the jocks are put into that category but mostly when people say the "populars" they mean the girls. The snotty, slutty, stuck up, prissy, bitches, that run the school, or at least the grade and anyone under them. I find myself glaring at the group of girls dressed in barley visible clothing who are either like dry humping their boyfriends, or drowning in their mouths.
"Sam? Are you gonna get out of the car sweetie, we are holding up the line."
I turn from the window,"Sorry mom, just thinking. See you later!" leaning over the seat I hug her then open the door and step into my first day back at hell.
