The cool August air was a refresher on my skin. My breath came out in clouds of warm air, contrasting against the early morning sky. I tugged the sleeves of my hoodie down over my hands, and stood up from my seat on the hill overlooking the town of Pemberton. I sighed. It was time for us to leave again.
The countryside was beautiful this time of year, the trees covered in moss and lush green leaves, and dew drops were caught in the spider webs that I walked past. The hills were littered with farmland, cattle and sheep. And the deer from the venison farm jumped around with their fawns in the cool grass.
The tents of our camp slowly came into view, and already, life was bustling for us. We had Pip and Andy cooking bacon and eggs over the gas stoves, with Jake and Cole making coffee and tea. The rest of the camp was already beginning to pack up the tents.
“Morning Sam” I turned to see Alex, hands stuffed in his pockets, purple roughed up hoody and smile on his lips. His hair was a blonde tangle from being slept on and his eyes drowsy but warm. I smiled back, saying, “Morning Alex, sleep well?” He laughed softly, handing me a plate of bacon and eggs with a slice of toast. “Do I ever? I guess I’m still getting used to sleeping on next to nothing” I shrugged “I guess so. I’m sorry that we don’t have enough mats for you though. I did offer” It was true, our group was running on slim supplies since our last move was so rushed, we had to leave behind a lot of the heavyweight things behind.
“I know, but Melissa needed it more than I did.” I bumped my knee into his, “Always such a gentleman” He blushed sheepishly. We dug into our breakfast. It wasn’t anything special, the bacon was old and the tea was tasteless but it was enough, and we couldn’t complain. Life on the road war unforgiving, we spend days just driving and driving, running from the people who seek us.
And we’re good at it. They never get too close; we are always one step ahead of them. But it wasn’t a nice way to live, always looking over your shoulder. But I guess it is the only way we can live, those years of torture and pain shattered our idea of trust, and we weren’t getting it back anytime soon.
I turned to the wash buckets and helped wash up the dishes from breakfast, having small talk with Shia, a small Asian girl only two years younger than me at 19. She was my bunkmate when we were back in Holovite, the prison where they experimented on us before we escaped, a year ago now. ”How are you and Cole?” Shia blushed. I smiled. She and Cole were getting friendlier by the day and me, being kind of like a big sister to Shia, couldn’t help but ask. “Alright I guess, he’s really nice to me”
I was happy for her, we all needed to have something nice in our lives. “How about you and Alex” I snorted “Don’t think I haven’t seen you two together Sam, he’s sooo into you!” I looked around and hushed her. “He is not!” I whispered, and she scoffed. “See for yourself, he’s totally checking you out as we speak” I peeked over my shoulder and sure enough, caught the gaze of Alex, who looked away quickly, a slight blush on his cheeks. I laughed and whipped Shia with my tea towel.
